Woke regarding film/TV: is it a big deal?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Yep. Which is why you just don't let it slide as "a difference of opinions." Some opinions get people stripped of human rights or even their very lives.

Want an opinion that can be debated? Talk about the foods you like or the Trek you love.

Try words, not a meme.

Now, everybody, the guy's just asking questions. A lot of questions. A lot of leading questions. A lot of disingenuous questions. But heck, Just Asking Questions.

  • BUT, do you see how there's an actual discussion point?
  • Regarding film and TV, do you think people are getting too focused on diversity?
  • Overall, do you think there's still good films and TV that don't get caught up in the "too woke" vs. "not woke enough" craziness?
  • You'd feel mislead, wouldn't you?
  • #2 A lot of people think homosexuality is lifestyle and thus object to it on that principle. Agree or disagree, does that make sense?
  • Straight guy dodging gay romance, gay guy dodging straight romance, is that any different than a dude dodging romance plots in general? It's preference at the end of the day.
  • Is it really that big of a deal if X person avoids X content they find objectionable for personal reasons?
  • #2 How do you know it's wrong?
  • #3 Genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors: what is the scientific evidence to support this?
  • If, who, and when I pair up with: this is behavior. Is it not? Genuine question.
  • Chilling with a gay friend or relative such as going out bowling and having a great time, but not wanting to watch gay content does not line up with the above definition. Does it?
  • Do we live in a society where everyone who disagrees with the majority is a bigot by default?
  • If an atheist avoids movies/TV with religious characters, is he a bigot too?
  • I take the time to respond to you. Can you give me the same curtesy, please?
  • Question: Am I wrong, simply because I disagree with you?
  • Am I those other posters? How would you like it if someone treated you the same way you are treating me, making assumptions about you and pushing you into a group you probably don't align with?
  • This is totalitarian 1984 thinking, is it not?

I mean, the OP started by saying, "I watch a lot of conservative stuff on YouTube" and ended the first post with "P.S. I don't want to dive into politics[...]" Really, I should have stopped reading after the first sentence.

I've found, generally, TV reflects its society (deep thought, I know). If they are focusing on diversity, it is because society is focused on diversity. Ad or subscription based, TV is still driven by society at large.

Since I haven't had a sexual relationship with a man in my lifetime, I'm 53, I'm going to say that the state hasn't forced anything on me. As far as entertainment goes, turn the channel if it offends you.

Why? You're a fucking bigot. And, if you keep it up, you'll end up with other bigots someplace else in the near future. Guaranteed.
At any point, did I say a film or series should be taken down? This is in defiance of free speech which I support. I agree with you that if someone doesn't like a film or a series, there is plenty else to watch.

Why do you call me a bigot? Maybe you're a bigot against Christians. What did we just accomplish?

And better, more skilled people than us in the worlds of biological and medical science have already done all of that. The Scientific Method has been adhered to.

They're gay. You don't have to set off fireworks and cheer, but you don't have to pee on the parade, either.
If you're going to make a scientific claim, back it up, or I call BS. If there is scientific evidence, go on google, come drop me a link. Convince me, unless that's too much work.

Did I say people can't be gay? No.
Did I say there can't be a movie or series about gay stuff? No.
Did I say people can't have a gay parade? No.
You are arguing against claims I have not made.

Absolutely not.

When did you choose to be straight?
I am going to assume you are asking a genuine question. Most people develop toward attraction to the opposite sex so we can propagate the species, ensure a next generation, and not go extinct. This is good for the human species. Some people develop differently. Can a straight person choose to be gay? Yes. Can a gay person choose to be straight? Yes. I believe we are more than just ugly bags of water, more than the sum of our DNA, but the product of who we choose to be. Do you understand?

I don't ask you to agree with me, but I do ask you to try to understand my point of view.
I will happily try to understand yours.

OP's just asking more questions, as if it wasn't a widely known disingenuous form of argument often used to push an argument and/or waste people's time. Meanwhile...

Granted, I live in a city of a million people or so, and it's a national capital, but what some people call diversity or woke is just everyday life here. I did nearly twenty years at a satellite communications company with engineers and other folks from all over the world. I work for a government agency with a lot of ethnic groups as well as a lot of differing gender identities and sexual preferences. That isn't looking for DEI, it isn't being woke, it's recognizing the people around me regularly. If you made a TV show about my workplaces and cast a bunch of straight cis white men who aren't immigrants, it'd be a biased and slanted work of fiction.

Do you have a problem with a man asking questions to begin discussions?
Are you prejudice against Conservatives?

You are like so many others. You tiptoe around just inside the rules using loaded language, then get offended when people call you out. Eventually, you'll slip.

I've seen this play about a thousand times in the twenty-plus years I've been a member here.

Can a straight person choose to be gay? Yes.

Go for it. Let's see the video.

Do you have a problem with a man asking questions to begin discussions?

The word is "prejudiced." In this context it's being used as a verb. Also, "conservative" is only capitalized when at the beginning of a sentence or the official name of a conservative organization.

I have a problem with a man who only asks questions.

I have a problem with a man who says that what he says isn't political but people who disagree with him are.
