Kurtzman intentionally killed Legacy?

Do you find Lower Decks funny?

Not really.

That said, it was closer to traditional Trek than this project (It had ships and space battles and everything that makes up Trek).

Setting the thing in a resort just screams, "We're not even trying."

I mean, there's every chance you could get ships and space battles. Frankly DS9, as a setting, sounds a bit dull and pedestrian...but in the end it turned out to way more interesting. I don't think it appeared to be anything close to traditional Trek when it was announced. No starship, no planets to explore etc

If so-called "great" sitcoms like Friends and Seinfeld can't do it, what makes you think THIS will?

No offense, but Friends and Seinfeld were hilariously funny. And that's not just me talking. As someone already said, perhaps the problem isn't those shows.

(To be fair, I don't find Lower Decks to be all that funny either, and I doubt I will find Tawny's pet project to be otherwise.)

Oh, goody ...

Another "sitcom" that won't make me laugh.

Really, it won't.

None of the "popular" modern sitcoms make me laugh (Not Friends. Not Seinfeld. Not The Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother. None of them.)

The last sitcom that made me laugh was The Golden Girls.

None of your examples are “modern” sitcoms. Closest one is Big Bang Theory and that’s been off the air for five years. The others have been off for a decade or more.

It was easier to do it in a space station than in a resort.

Are they going to be doing backchannel diplomacy while scrambling to ensure each room has fresh towels and chocolate mints on the pillows?

(ETA: I was a cook at a resort. I made enough pizzas during Spring Break to last me a lifetime! )

When I think of modern sitcoms, I think of Ted Lasso, Schitt's Creek, What We Do in the Shadows, or Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Who lists anything with a laugh track as modern?
Someone who hates sitcoms and doesn't know what modern series are like I guess.

Personally the only sitcoms I've seen in the last decade or so are The Good Place and Red Dwarf, so from my own limited data 50% of sitcoms are still recorded in front of a live studio audience.

The great sitcoms of now have long moved passed that
Very true. The single camera approach is pretty much common place these days, while a "live studio audience" is much more of a niche. I think the only thing I've seen recently made in such an old-fashioned way was That 90's Show, which makes sense.

As I mentioned above, I'm thinking it will be much more similar to Scrubs or even M.A.S.H. it will have one large core setting, be filmed single camera, and have a mix of comedy and drama.

M*A*S*H had a Laff Track (much to its creators' consternation).

They did away with it for a while (which was innovative for its time). CBS ordered it put back.

The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother are much more recent.
Not as recent as it feels. There has been a lot of cultural shift since then. Comedies are different.

Brooklyn 99 is my go to contemporary comedy series. Schitt's Creek looks funny and I enjoy Animal Control too. Very different to watching Mash, Night Court, Golden Girls, or Big Bang.

I still enjoy all of those but I laugh for different reasons.

To be fair, I grew up with 3 Stooges, Mel Brooks, and Monty Python, plus stage plays, so my comedy enjoyment runs differently than most.

So far fireproof is winning the 'Name a sitcom made in the last 10 years' challenge with Animal Control, which started in 2023. Ted Lasso (2020) and What We Do in the Shadows (2019) are pretty recent as well.
