Battlestar Galactica getting rebooted (again) for NBS's streaming service

Starbucks had a cigar at the pyramid game when she punched out the superior arsehole.

The character’s smoking was dropped over time the request of Sackhoff who also quit the habit
Thank you. I found the original article via WayBack Machine

It seems it was written in "02-07-06", so I suppose, American date - February 2006?

Edit - this article from 2005 says he wrote it in the 2004

Well......

I could still appreciate the characters of Face and Starbucks as portrayed by Benedict, even though they don't fit modern times anymore. During those times, that type of behaviour from those two fictional characters was acceptable. And you kind of know that perhaps the actor was similar, considering how men behaved a lot in those times (and often still do). Rose colored glasses I suppose...
But him saying things like that.... I can only hope he matured a bit more during the last 20 years.

He does seem a very odd man. I heard him interviewed on Irish radio circa 2008 and on the one hand, he seems very gracious and amiable but OTOH he’s ultra-right-wing. I’m not saying you can’t be both, but he would admit himself to being very out of step with Hollywood thinking. IIRC, he lived out in the middle of nowhere because he basically doesn’t like most of society!

Didn't Benedict retract his criticisms later on? I thought there were photos of him hanging out with Sackoff? Or were those photos fictional?

Well, if you look at this post BSG and post A-Team career, it's just some unknown VOD, Sci-Fi telemovies and a couple of guest appearance in network shows.

He removed the article from his website, soo...?

Which could also mean he just got tired of the backlash and didn't want to deal with it anymor. It's not an actual apology or anything.

Well, I can agree with that last part to be true, humans and humanity sucks.

I honestly couldn't tell you.

According to one poster on Reddit it was Katee who reached out to him. And another said he hit on her the whole time. Again, words by others on the interwebz.

I had to dig a little bit. This is the photo:

It was taken before the infamous article. In fact during an interview with Katee Sackhoff she said

Katee Sackhoff Criticizes Dirk Benedict
By

The new issue of TV Zone Special features an interview with actress Katee Sackhoff, who plays the new, female Starbuck in Ronald D. Moore's version of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. Here are a few excerpts in which she defends her version of the hotshot space pilot.
While actor Richard Hatch, who played Apollo in the original GALACTICA series, has become a regular in the new cast, original Starbuck Dirk Benedict has been openly critical of GALACTICA's new incarnation, and Sackhoff positively bristles when she talks about her predecessor.
"If Dirk pitched up to work on the show I'd probably quit," she says. "I met him in Los Angeles and I thought we'd really hit it off, he was a great guy, he was very complimentary and very un-Hollywood. Then he turned around a month later and talked complete crap about the show and the actors on it. He wrote an article saying the network sold out and my character was more brash than his character.
"I felt like he'd stabbed me in the back. I know that sounds like me being very sensitive but I felt very befriended by him, then I read that about a month later.
"If you add up the amount of time Dirk Benedict spent playing the character, not the years obviously but the number of episodes, I'm more Starbuck than he is, so put that in your pipe and smoke it."
More from Katee can be found at the
TV Zone website.

I guess we were posting at the same time.
Yeah, if all of his talk happened AFTER that photoshoot, total douchebag on him. Cashing in because doing publicity like that earns you money, and then backstabbing like that....

He could have had a role in the new series, like Richard Hatch (who I think has always been appreciated by critics for his role as Tom Zarek). Instead, what did he get by behaving like this?

Ok, the article was written in 2004, so when the character was still an active smoker.

He didn't even watch the miniserie.

I don’t think it got further than brain-storming and joking around in the writer’s room, but one idea for the season one finale was for Dirk Benedict to be in Baltar’s vision of the Opera House and introduce himself as God.

I think they were a little more serious about trying to get Jane Seymour to play Admiral Cain.

I looked closely at his filmography, and his only remotely notable role was his cameo in the A-Team movie.

There must be a reason.

IIRC, them together getting a coffee at a Starbucks was part of some promotional thing around the time of the miniseries release (and can be seen on the individual DVD release of the miniseries). Benedict's tirade came at some point after that.

Thanks for all the information on Benedict's backstory. It is a shame that he took that attitude, which seems to be something born out of resentment and bitterness. Starbuck is one of the two roles he's recognized for and nothing ever surpassed the A-Team in his career.
