What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Lt. Commanders are usually referred to as 'commander' when addressed, or 'Lt. Commander' durimg something, like a trial. They are not just called 'Lt.' while at the Lt. Commander rank. This has been true for all the shows in the franchise.

I guess it's always safer to 'round up' a rank than to 'round down' if you don't want to run the risk somebody takes offense. (Also because I think in this case 'Commander' is the main rank, and lieutenant in this context approximately means 'deputy' or 'substitute' AFAIK).

From the French meaning, quite literally, "place holder." Originally for officers who "stood in" for the commanding officer.

Pretty sure real life military does this, too.

(Example: a Major General simply referred to as 'General' or Lt. Colonel is normally called 'Colonel', unless during official situations like an initial introduction to someone, court martial, trial, investigation, etc.)

One of the most glaring weaknesses of The Search for Spock is that it really shows Starfleet (and possibly the Federation) to be a really terrible organization. The series was smattered with this as well to an extent but TSFS kind of doubled down on it. To say the least.

It never occurred to me that because McCoy is in a bar blabbing classified information that the Federation solution to this is to have him declared insane and committed. Paging Dr. Van Gelder! (If one was being generous one might figure that we missed the scene where he is at least tested or something. But I'm not feeling generous because this movie is all glorious heart and has no brain.)

But then you have Starfleet. Not only are Our Heroes The Best of the... Well, they're the best. Because everyone else in Starfleet is incompetent. And if you listen to Nimoy's commentary this is not an accident. As far as he's concerned Our Crew are the Real Deal and everyone else are pretenders.
Huh. I never really thought of that, but you're right. Plus, I had no idea that was in the commentary. That's pretty wild.

Kirk's response to Sarek that he had to what he did because "the cost would have been his soul," and ultimately Kirk's "human" response to Spock's inquiry about why he came back for him ("the needs of the one outweighed the needs of the many")
Some of Shatner's best work IMO.

Shatner did amazing work in his seven Trek movies. Some might not like to give him that, but he outshone and - yes - outperformed even Patrick Stewart when he shared screen time with him. Shatner's performances in TWOK, TSFS and TVH are some of the best of his career.

It just occurred to me: given what I think of the TNG and Kelvin Movies (FC is the only one I'm really a fan of), and given how much I like DSC and Georgiou (both versions)...

... It's highly likely I'll think Section 31 is the best Star Trek movie since First Contact. TV or not.

If that's not a Controversial Opinion, I don't know what is.

I got a few

1 I don't think LaForge crossed the line in Galaxy's Child. I think he just made a human mistake of forming preconceptions.

2 I don't hate Harry Kim at all and think he and Paris actually make for a good buddy duo.

3 Neelix is a good character as well.

4 Quark is 4th best character in all of Trek behind Kirk/Spock and McCoy.

5 Martock should have been LGBTQ. People talk about Garak but I kind of like they didn't do it with Garak because the more secrets you have with him the better. Martock on the other hand would have been a great choice. A chance to explore that from someone in a warrior culture and also because Worf wasn't always the most woke of characters when it comes to this issue. To see a adopted brother be this would have made for fine character drama.

Neelix is unironically one of my top 10 trek characters of all time. Oddly enough he brought a really strong sense of humanity to Voyager. He was simultaneously a comic relief and allowed to be complex and genuine. I love Neelix so much he had one of the best arcs and I have mad respect for anybody that can be a beacon of optimism and levity like he was for the crew. Which brings me to the point about Quark. He did the same for DS9 but on the other side of the coin lol. DS9 did so much for exploring the complexity of so many cultures and races that were just one note and 2 dimensional before. Quark is one of the most genuine multi dimensional and interesting depictions of a character, especially a nonhuman character, that Trek has ever had. That exemplifies the best thing about DS9 in my opinion and why I think its the best trek: nothing is ever black and white. The Martok thing, now that coulda been real interesting. I would have loved to see how Worf would grapple with that, although I don’t think we didn’t get enough juice out of their relationship as it stands. Would be a cool cultural study tho. I also agree with the part about Garak entirely. The ambiguity and insinuation is what makes him so interesting.

Ok, so, here's the thing on that episode. Am I supposed to hate it? I knows that's an odd question, lol.

I see people poke fun at the episode from time to time, but I can never tell if it's generally regarded as good or just fun to hate on. Personally, I always thought it was good. The premise is ridiculous, but, it presents a great moral dilemma.
The whole episode was outlandish and goofy, but thats kinda par for the course with Voyager. I personally think its one of the best episodes of the series tho. Represents one of my favorite Trek themes of dealing with moral dilemas that would only be possible thanks to sci-fi. Also why I love the Trill so much. The question of personhood has always intrigued me and this episode is a great exploration into it.

Re: Search For Spock III Federation - Then The Final Frontier's Federation is downright miserable. Here's Nimbus III, a site for all three powers to talk together, and it's a rundown, drunken posting, and the big seven are THE best in the Federation - no, even then, it's mostly just Shatner Kirk and Spock, everything is grimy and dingy, everyone is so depressed and internally jarred they join a cult by a guy doing what should be somewhat common knowledge (Vulcan mind stuff)....

Controversial Star Trek Opinion:

It's a TV show.

THAT'S GOING TOO DAMN FAR!
