Tron: Ares

Jeff Bridges says he's back for the third one.
I was really excited to learn this, a few days ago. Presumably, he'll be playing Flynn again, or possibly a version of Clu that survived the events of Legacy. But it still sucks they couldn't get Garrett Hedlund or Olivia Wilde back.

Couldn't or chose not to? It sounds like they're trying to take this in a new direction away from Legacy, so I doubt they ever even put any serious thought or effort into bringing them back.

As I understand it, when the original version of Tron 3 was being prepped in 2015, both Hedlund and Wilde were attached. But then for whatever reason, Disney shelved it (Boxleitner thought it was due to their greater interest in Star Wars and Marvel). Anyway, we now reach the present, and Disney's abandonment of the previous plans pissed off Boxleitner to the point he freely ditched this one. I can't even guess what happened with the others; maybe the new story didn't contain them or the actors were just too busy. Either way, I'm still disappointed.

I'm sure if it looks even passably good I'll go. But we missed a David Warner / Cillian Murphy team up.

As it is I just want The Old Man season 2.

Agreed on all of this plus I'm still pissed about the terrible treatment of Tron: Uprising (constant rescheduling, lack of promotion, eventual premature cancelation due to the first two). Considering his heavy involvement in the series, I can't help but wonder if that was a contributing factor for Boxleitner.

I actually agree with you, I would have loved to see a direct follow up to Legacy, which I think is a much better movie than it tends to get credit for. I was just objectively pointing out that we don't know if they ever even tried to get Hedlund and Wilde back. Because it sounded like you thought that the only reason we are getting Ares is because they refused to come back.
I'm hoping that the fact that Ares leaves the Grid like Quorra did at the end of Legacy means we'll at least get some kind of acknowledgement of the events of Legacy, and maybe a reference or two to what became of her and Sam.

It doesn't appear to have been posted online anywhere, but they did show the first footage and the cast also talked a bit about the movie at D23.
Here's how IGN described it:
Following the introduction, the first trailer for Tron: Ares was shown. It features a man gazing at the stars and wondering if he's alone, only to realize that intelligent life has existed all along within AI and tech.

"There is something at work inside my soul I do not understand. I came here to find something," Ares says during the trailer. "Something important. Permanence."
We see Area walking through the real world following by a big Tron ship in the sky; Tron bike paths in the real world; battles with staffs, discs being thrown, and more. It finishes with Bridges appearing in a white robe with the line, "Greetings, Program" and confirmation that Nine Inch Nails will be handling the soundtrack.
Sounds pretty cool.
So if this is popular enough for them to make more, does this mean we'll get a different band doing the music for each one?

Yeah, it's kind of weird that Reznor/Ross will be credited as Nine Inch Nails after all this time. It's hard not to assume that's Disney just wanting a similar situation to that of Daft Punk on Tron Legacy.

Some people did try to post the trailer (or their recording of it) on YouTube, but the almighty hand of Disney immediately came down from above to smite them all.

"Thou shalt not release an official trailer before me."

I wonder what kind of craziness he got up to to get into character this time?
