Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien developing new live-action Trek series

I know it was in the comics. But it was stupid there and should not have been so dumb in the TV show. It pretty much killed the MCU for me. The whole MCU is controlled by some stupid robot named Kevin and Daredevil drops out of the sky confused. Just do dumb. How do we go from the Extremely brutal realism of something like punisher to the extremely silly TV show like She-Hulk?? It was a flat out surreal comedy. We are talking green acres type comedy here .. 😂 ...not a good mix imo..

Anyhow General audiences who never read the comics are already staring to flee the ever more silly MCU content.

I fear this is what will happen to Star Trek.
It was brilliant. Broke and even commented on the cookie cutter approach the MCU has.

That's a rather primitive view of it.

What about a character study of Seven of Nine? This woman ate, slept, and breathed evil for eighteen years.

How does it impact her as a Captain? She's unlike any other Captain Enterprise has ever had. She's far more attuned to evil than any of Enterprise's previous Captains.

Seven has a long history of doing VERY bad things. She's now trying to go straight. She's worried about her legacy. She wants to be remembered as being something other than a bloodthirsty killer.

Way to generalize there, pal.

You act as if it's a bad thing. (Gilligan's Island in space? See Star Trek: Voyager.) Seven of Nine was originally conceived as Trek's answer to Xena (which was still the rage back in 1998 when she first debuted).

Voyager would go on to become a seminal show in the franchise. It was so influential, it was given a follow-up in Star Trek: Prodigy.
What you completely fail to realize is this entire post only proves my point.

Your "want" for Legacy is rooted solely in preconceived bias. I mean, calling Voyager "seminal" is beyond the pale.

I kind of feel the same way. The shows should be working their asses off to make the Star Trek universe feel more believable overall but comedies tend to bend or break the reality for the sake of a joke. Even Lower Decks, which I love, turned a character in a puppet, introduced Dooplers and has a running joke about a koala god.

It makes me think of the Arrowverse, which started off slowly introducing super powers into a fairly grounded world. Then Legends of Tomorrow came along and did fun things like turning the characters into cartoons or turning the earth into a bowling ball, and it destroyed any sense of realism the other shows still had. Don't get me wrong, I thought Legends was great, it was my favourite of the shows. Unfortunately it was the only one I really cared about by the end, because it had turned the Arrowverse into an absurd fantasy universe and it was the only show that really belonged there.

Yeah. I totally get that comics books have done this. I remember back when I read comics the one green lantern that looks like a dog....he travelled to his home planet and the continents were shaped like dog bones. Fire hydrants all over. I was a teen when I was seeing that and thinking...... This is incredibly stupid. 😂
Producers start putting that crap into general audience consumed media and I don't think it's going to be forgiven as much as comic readers forgive bad comics. The dumpling god in a spoon and all the other silliness in Thor Love and Thunder comes to mind. That movie and the She Hulk tv show went beyond my tolerance for goofiness. Because the those really ruined the MCU for me. I'm scared to go watch Deadpool/wolverine. 😂

Again I don't mind light hearted episodes of any shows. But start getting heavy handed and ridiculous at every corner and they totally lose me and probably a good chunk of their audience I would bet.

it's just getting too juvenile for me now. It started out a bit more adult and now it's reverted into something different. Glad you enjoy it though.

That’s an odd definition of juvenile.

Well it's the way I feel about the current MCU. I remember all the hooplab and anger surrounding The Phantom menace and Jar Jar.....like him walking in poop. 😂

Now we get a chicken dumpling god in a spoon and Deadpool having sexual fantasies about unicorns and it's all good... 😂....

I think She-Hulk, Loki and WandaVision were stellar TV with smart writing that said something. Really Enjoyed Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight. Werewolf by Night was loads of fun. The movie output has been a mixed bag, with Eternals being the only real dud.

You saw the previous Deadpool films right? The new one is more the same type of humor.

Not sure "chicken dumpling god" means.

Lucas likes to think of Star Wars as being for kids. Poop jokes are about right,

Yeah I know Deadpool/wolverine is the same. Haven't seen it but my friend told me. I'm still not sure if Deadpools breaking of the 4th wall is a mental issue or a superpower. Writers are not too consistent with him in the comics. Never really liked the character.

Again I get that people love this stuff. I was hoping that the films/shows would not go into such silly territory. But there you have it. Haven't seen Moon Knight Watched half of the Eternals. Loki and Wandervison Ms. marvel were not as silly as She-Hulk or Deadpool. Didn't like the Marvels.

The show might work as a landlocked Love Boat:

  • A Romulan and a Klingon are having an extramarital affair in Room 203B.
  • A Ferengi woman in the middle of a divorce is on the run from her angry ex-husband.
  • Two assassins who've been ordered to kill each other end up in bed together (a riff on the movie Prizzi's Honor).
  • A visiting dignitary makes impossible demands upon the staff.

I’ve never cared for Deadpool in the comics. Never got why he was popular. I still don’t. The movies are driven by one thing, Ryan Reynolds. Wouldn’t work without him.

It really doesn’t matter why or how he breaks the fourth wall. Silly question.

Ya don’t gotta like them all. I don’t understand the “silly” charge.

Well the fourth wall breaking matters to me. If its a super power like She Hulk has and he can somehow go out of screen and change his story. It matters to me it's just silly stupid.

Well a chicken dumpling god sitting in a spoon is silly to me. Daredevil falling out of the sky because she hulk had the ending rewrote is silly to me.

Do you find the original Lost In space silly or Batman66? Because from where I'm standing the MCU has pretty much gone in the direction of those two shows.

She-Hulk felt like an unironic version of that South Park episode with crab people where the writers realised their shit wasn't good, so just came up with some stupid nonsense.

Nah, it fun. It’s comedic. It’s humor. It’s allowed. Not sure it's even a superpower in She-Hulk. it just is

Still no clue about this dumpling god. Did I miss or forget something in the MCU?

I watched both Batman ‘66 and LiS first run in the 60s as a kid. Loved both. They were meant to be (or became) camp. I accept them for what they are and we’re meant to be. I did go through a “serious business “ phase where I hrumphed and look down upon both shows, though. Thankfully I grew out of it. The MCU is not going through a camp phase just because some entries are more light hearted and are willing to make fun of the tropes. In fact I’d say the tone of most of the films are pretty consistent from Iron Man all the way to Quantumania. Some dip a little heavier into humor from time to time.

Trevor Slattery is about as close to camp as a Marvel character gets. Very OTT. And hilarious. And if you think the latter day MCU is camp. You don't know camp.

Humor is not an anathema to the MCU or Trek. It's been baked into both since day one. A fourth wall breaking character or a sitcom format isn't a sign of the apocalypse. It's just taking a different tack. Trek didn't end when they did a animated comedy (which fandom has now embraced, Koala god and all) It will survive a live action sitcom. Sit back an practice some IDIC.

It's literally riffing on stuff they did in the comics back in the early 1990s, when South Park was barely a gleam in Parker and Stone's eyes. She-Hulk was talking to readers and confronting her writer/artist and editors all the time.

It took six years to bring Starfleet Academy and Section 31 to the airwaves.

This is not going to happen tomorrow (assuming it happens at all).

I absolutely agree that humour has been there since day one and is a big part of what makes Trek successful, but there's a difference between comedy that comes from within the reality of the universe and comedy that bends reality for the sake of a joke. Fourth wall breaking comedy straight up breaks reality and that's damaging to the whole franchise. To me, at least.

Like I love Deadpool 1 and 2, they're probably my favourite X-Men movies, but they're also the last X-Men movies I watched. I couldn't take the serious movies seriously anymore. Granted that's also because they got really bad and the continuity was a damn mess, but once something like Deadpool or Legends of Tomorrow opens the floodgates the reality of the setting gets washed away.

Every comedy series within a franchise should take the setting just as seriously as the serious shows. I'm looking at you, Strange New Worlds.

Yeah I know the comics had i never liked it. But still non comic readers I don't think really like that type of stuff in the MCU. I just wish they would have remained a step above the comics is all. Here's the dumpling god...

Nah. There is nothing in SNW that shows it takes the setting less seriously that any other iteration of Star Trek. It works quite well with in the parameters of the franchise. Even when dealing with musical anomalies and hyperactive officers from the future.

I would watch the hell out of this show.
