What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Not liking this... House arrest isn't something I'd have liked to have seen, and I don't think I'm alone with that opinion. Hence the "Controversial" on your part.

I think Picard was boxed in. He threatened to resign and Starfleet called his bluff. He had to fold or Starfleet Command would never his protests seriously again. They'd think he'd whatever they say no matter what.

Maybe it’s because I had Search For Spock on in the background while I was working today. But I think it could have been Picard's “the answer is no, therefore I am going anyway” moment like before Kirk stole the Enterprise.

Maybe house arrest is a bit tough (although, c’mon before Dahj/Soji did he ever leave La Barre) but maybe Starfleet gently encourages him not to leave Earth or something like that. Like an un-official house arrest. I mean, in this idea he basically forges orders to get ships to follow him in the rescue attempt.

I mean, I love music to be sure, and I would agree it's important, but it's second tier to characters and stories.

So, possibly controversial opinion (personal preference):
Things I look for and find entertaining in a show/film:

• First tier: characters, story and themes
• Second tier: performances, innovation, technology and music
• Third tier: VFX

For me, one of the lower two can be off and I'll still enjoy it. But, it gets shakier at the top.

Personally I can't say which is more important between story, music, visuals etc. as if a table's missing just one of its legs it's going to fall over.

I'd kind of been taking music for granted until I watched the Babylon 5 spin-off, Crusade, which has a soundtrack so bad that it ruined every episode for me. The best writers and most expensive VFX in the world couldn't have salvaged those stories. Though 90s Trek did okay despite its insipid sonic wallpaper so it is possible to make a great episode without a great soundtrack.

Well, preferences differ from person to person. Music was always a very important part in my life. I call myself a musician and played in bands when I was younger. Still it's one of my passions and f.e I spend a lot of time discovering new music and bands.
So about Star Trek...recently I read that Roddenberry wanted Goldsmith to write the theme for TOS. Goldsmith had no time but recommended Alexander Courage. And for me he did it perfectly. It transported this 60s flair. Also the music during the episodes was mostly good in TOS.
TNG...the theme by Goldsmith is great, the soundtrack for the scenes was not always my taste.
DS9..the theme sounds like Goldsmith but is by Dennis McCarthy and it's great, too.
The Voyager theme is actually my favorite theme by Goldsmith.
Oh, I could go on but I don't wanna bore you
Anyway, in modern Trek I like the theme and music in Picard season 1+2 a lot.
And in SNW, too. It transports emotions very well.
Kudos to Jeff Ruso and others, too.

I'll saying "Enterprising Young Men" has a good upswell to it that I really enjoy and appreciate.

And again, my comment is not that music is unimportant: it's that poor music won't take away from an episode if everything else is clicking.

One of the biggest Babylon 5 fans I know just cannot sit through A Call to Arms or Crusade because of Evan H Chen's music. It really does rob them of that quintessential "space opera" feel that Christopher Franke's music provided in spades. To this day I don't think he's ever completed Crusade beyond reading the scripts.

It's become a cliche.

Permanently? Not that many times compared to the amount of TV shows & Movies about them.

Is it > 1x time, YES!

But it's hardly a common occurance where it dies permanently.

You can see all the times that the Enterprise has been destroyed here. It's not that many.

Some people need more faith of the heart, and I'll just leave it at that.

The first version of that Intro Song was good, that's a hill I'm willing to die on.

The 2nd version was a weaker version of the same song.

I really dislike the 2nd incarnation where they try to change it's tone and make it "Pop Music"-ish.
