MLB 2024: Baseball is for Everyone (subject to local blackout restrictions)

Damn. Baseball advertising gets zero penetration in my house. I didn't know it was the All-Star break.

I would have watched the Derby last night, but a derecho swept through eastern Iowa last night and knocked out power from roughly 6:30 p.m. until just before noon today.

It's the end of the MLB draft where teams just throw darts or draft players as a favor or for PR reasons, so the sons of Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz and Mark Grudzielanek were selected, with Boston being the one to take D'Angelo Ortiz.

Ingrid Andress, who performed a very, uh, interesting rendition of the National Anthem at the Home Run Derby last night, has announced that she was drunk during the performance and is entering treatment for substance abuse.
I'm tempted to call BS on this. It just feels like a quick way to stop a social media assault on her product.

As a longtime recovering alcoholic myself, I don't see a reason to doubt her. Sometimes you have too much on the plane and you show up hammered to work.

It would certainly explain a lot about her performance and demeanor; she's also a lot older than I was when I went to rehab. Addiction is a terrible thing and I don't really like the idea of this being a publicity stunt. Openly admitting that you have a problem takes a lot of strength and character.

The PR stunt isn't out of this world, as far as conspiracy theories go, but I like your explanation better.

Rays' new ballpark approved by St. Petersburg city council.

The ballpark is part of a broader $6.5 billion project that supporters say would transform an 86-acre (34-hectare) tract in the city's downtown, with plans in the coming years for a Black history museum, affordable housing, a hotel, green space, entertainment venues, and office and retail space. There's the promise of thousands of jobs as well.
"Thousands of jobs". How is anyone still falling for that?

I mean, a lot of those jobs are the workers building the stadium, right? And how many of those are from out of state companies that specialize in building sports stadiums?
You're asking questions and going deeper than most. This is an instant gratification culture, especially in the sports world. It sounds good so it must be good, right?

That's about all the thinking that goes on.

The Cubs have dismissed Seiya Suzuki's translator before he has a chance to steal Suzuki's money and gamble on sports.

I made up the last part.

They'll make that up off $15 hot dogs in no time.

The taxpayers of the city and county are now on the hook for roughly $550 million of this new stadium. That's the bullshit part. Stu Sternberg is a Wall Street magnate, worth hundreds of millions of dollars. He can do what any normal person does when they want to build a house: Go to the banks and get a loan, putting assets as collateral.

Public financing of private enterprise is the ultimate scam.

The Mariners lost a 10-game AL West lead in 24 games, a new record in the divisional era. The previous record was the Angels blowing a 10.5-game lead in 33 games in 1995 to... the Mariners.

The Rays have now traded Randy Arozarena, Zach Eflin, Jason Adam and Isaac Parades. Plenty of chips left to trade as well, such as Pete Fairbanks and Brandon Lowe. Fire Sale? Not necessarily. They have pitching replacements as good or better in the wings and the best hitting prospect in the game in Junior Caminero. If (as expected) the Pinellas County Commission signs off on the Rays new stadium (scheduled for 2028) at least some of the prospects they've gained will be ready to play.

Cubs dealing Morel for Parades was a bit of a shock, Morel is a real energetic go-go player who just hasn't had a good year.

I wish the Cubs had kept Hunter Bigge. Dude has some serious velocity on his pitches and we're lacking that in the bullpen.
