Big Finish goes live with stage performance of new 8th Doctor story

Annoyingly it's the week after I'm going to be in London, so I can't be making another trip. Only two performances so I expect a fast sell-out.

Damn! I would love to see that.

Between this and the Stranger Things production, I really wish I was living in London!

That would be so cool to see. Now if only they could create enough hype for a spin off show...

It is going to be recorded but it's unclear if that means just audio or video too.

TBH since there's already going to be an in-studio audio release it wouldn't make much sense to do another without that extra dimension.

Paul McGann is not the first actor who has played the Doctor on television to bring the character to the stage. He's not even the second. I actually just found out that this existed while doing some online research into the wilderness years after watching "Downtime".

And while there was never any official recording made of the performance, there is, well... this.

I've always known about The Ultimate Adventure (or at least once I started listening to Big Finish and dug around its history and beyond), but it's something I've looked too deeply for. I'll definitely have to bookmark that YouTube video for viewing at a later time.

The sales turned out to be a right cock-up with tickets going on sale before the time they were supposed to start for people who'd registered for early access. It's not on in a massive theater (unsurprisingly) and I think anyone waiting for the non-advance ticket sales to open is going to be out of luck or stuck way at the back up near the roof.

I saw the Ultimate Adventure, unfortunately on the night that Jon Pertwee sadly had to bow out due to ill health partway through. Fortunately, this gave the EXCELLENT!! David Banks (normally the Cyber-Leader) a chance to understudy as the Doctor and do a bloody good job of it, even recovering very well (to a massive laugh from the audience) when he forgot his line about what a Dalek had done to the TARDIS:

Doctor: "I simply cannot tell you what that stupid Dalek has done!"

Companion: "It hasn't technobabbled the McGuffin, has it?" (paraphrasing)

Doctor: "That is PRECISELY what it has done!"

Brilliant!

It's not real clear from the articles, is this going to be a full on play with costumes and everything, or just the cast sitting at a table or standing at mikes and reciting the dialogue? Basically just a Dr. Who version of this.

I think standing at mikes.

I was initially quite envious of anyone going to see this, but I’m a bit less so now that it just appears to be a read-through on stage.

It is surprising that apart from the Ultimate Adventure there hasn’t been a DW stage show. There are many bottle episodes that would work as a play. And when you look at the scale and budget of many west end or broadway shows, it wouldn’t be that hard to do a fairly spectacular DW play. It probably wouldn’t be that hard to land a former DW actor, given that most of them have done theatre both before and after their time on the show. Or you could have someone new playing either an existing or new (non-canon?) Doctor, or a Timeless Child incarnation.

Yeah, they've managed to do stage shows for Star Trek, a play for Stranger Things, a Spider-Man Broadway musical, and live arena shows for DC and Marvel, so you'd think it wouldn't be that hard to a new stage show for Doctor Who.
