Actually, Captain Styles in Star Trek III beat him to it. Of course, when he said it, the ship just shuddered to a stop, so does that count?

Shoot. I forgot that, because it even predates Picard's "engage", which was kind of the inception of having a particular personal phase altogether. Before that, no one ever even considered that a thing, e g. Kirk.

Funnily, I feel like it was Kurn & Jellico coming onto TNG & deliberately saying a thing in contrast to Picard that began this whole thing where everyone's got one now. Even Picard's people (Data & Riker) just co-opted his, in lieu of their own thing during the show.

How, cool of a captain are you that for centuries nobody bothered, & then they all heard about Picard & were like "Aww man, I want my own captain lingo too"? To the point that now they're running out of cool stuff to say

Well, here's how I (as a non-Brit) would imagine an English Star Trek would go:

- Engineering, would you mind awfully if we went to warp? <adds hurriedly> only if it's no trouble
- Bridge, I'm frightfully sorry to inform you we would mind right now. Though we'd be most happy to oblige you after we've prevented that warp core breach.
- I'm afraid I'll have to insist. Some minor tactical details aren't developing quite as hoped for.
- Specifically?
- Our shields are offline, we are held in a tractor beam, our ship is being carved apart by that cutting laser beam and about 50 Borg drones have beamed over to our vessel. Also, our captain seems to be ever so slightly inconvenienced right now.
- Sir?
-That is to say, he's being assimilated.
- Oh dear. Most regrettable turn of events.
- Indeed.
