Just so wayoung can't claim ALL Dune threads here

Looks interesting, maybe i am influenced but design wise it leans well into Villeneuve's movies.

Thematically i always "loved" the Bene Gesserit and their scheming behind the scenes and i hope this show answers some questions i've been having.

Agreed. I think so the power plays behind the different Great Houses is always interesting. I love the idea of seeing how it started with "Sisterhood" and then formed in to this very secretive society, very close to all positions of power. I find that incredibly fascinating from a storytelling point of view.

Judging by the brief look at the production design it looks more like a direct tie-in to the movies.

Yeah, it bugs me that something that is set 10.000 years before Dune feels almost the same in terms of look and feel. But I'll give it a shot because it does look like it could be pretty good!

Didn't even notice this one when I posted in Messiah! My bad.

The odd thing to me is that Dune takes place in the year 10191. So if they go back 10,000 years, doesn't that make it during the time of the Roman Empire? ;)

It's simultaneously bemusing and infuriating how many people pay NO attention to the calendrical conventions of the Imperium.

The year is 10,191 A.G. That is made very plain in the novel, both within the narrative and in the Appendix.

A.G. stands for After Guild - after the foundation of the Spacing Guild. THAT is the event that the people of the Imperium considered such an important and significant thing that they decided that everything that happened before would be B.G. - Before Guild.

Consider what life was like before the Spacing Guild was formed, before spacefold technology existed, before a safe way was known that didn't need relativity and could be done without risk of getting lost or finishing your journey inside a star or planet or mashed up with something else that would kill you.

It changed the Imperium in ways that guaranteed safe transport of trade goods, luxury goods, passengers, smaller ships that were useful for planetary travel, troops for war, and so many other things. It guaranteed that messages and diplomacy could be conducted in a reasonably timely and safe manner.

The Imperium's calendar has nothing to do with our calendar. They reckoned it from what they considered important, and the fact is that the breakthrough the Guild had came at least 10,000 years in OUR future.

So Dune actually starts approximately 20,000 years in our future.

I thought was being made specifically as a prequel to Villeneuve's movies?
This looks pretty interesting, but I'm a little nervous since it's based on one of Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's books, and everything I've heard about this is horrible. Would it even be possible do make a good series based off of something they wrote?

Wasn't there are re-vamping of the calendar and that 10,191 is after the founding of the Space Guild.

Or was that a retconn by those authors of shoddy books who shall not be named?

I'm pretty sure there are references to the A.G. calendar in the original Dune.

Like I said in the Messiah thread, visually the show looks gorgeous and I love the casting, so I'm going in with an open mind. But I also hope it's not based on any of the Brian Herbert material (even though I haven't actually read any of it...just the terrible synopses and reviews of them).
