Fifth Season is Final Season

It really is a disappointing decision. I hope S5 was done in a way so they were able to wrap things up in case this was it.

it’s not like Disco where they can go shot some extra stuff.

Scripted TV that can't be produced without special effects and expensive sets is basically moribund. Only 20 episode seasons you get anymore is filmed on location schlock like Law & Order and cheap 3-5 set sitcoms.

Grey's Anatomy, NCIS ...

And yet somehow they're still going forward with Academy, the show almost nobody wants.

Tawny Newsome is now writing for SFA.

This has ruined my day. :wah: I had hoped Trek, in general, could have escaped the worst of the streaming bubble collapse, but I guess the signs were always there. Disco stopping at 5, Picard with 3, Section 31 in development hell and Prodigy being murdered in broad daylight. Sigh. I hope beyond hope that Lower Decks comes back again in comics and books.

“Finally, thank you for always being so creative and joyful, for filling convention halls and chanting ‘LOWER DECKS!’ We remain hopeful that even beyond season five, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures.”

This screams higher rank spinoff of Lower Decks to me. Like eventually by the end of season 5 they will be Lt. Rank or higher most likely so they won't be Lower Deckers anymore, so the name of the show won't make sense at that point, but it sents up a great opportunity for a Spinoff on a more presigious ship like the Titan. Outside chance the hint means Academy or Legacy cameos instead of animated series spinoff.

Prodigy at least is getting season 2 on certain streamers who could possibly renew for Season 3 at least if they choose.

Given that season 5 is also the final season for Discovery; safe assumption that Strange New Worlds will end after five seasons?
Not really. We simply don't have enough information to make that assumption. We know based on quarter statements that Discovery was supplanted by Picard for audience, and we know during that same period before we got any nuggets from Nielsen, that SNW bested Picard. Thus we know that at least for the moment (its possible that Discovery could just explode this season, its not very likely but it is still mathematically possible), that SNW is the crown jewel to date of Star Trek in streaming.

Does that mean it would still get canned after 5 season if it maintains that (and of course keeps its relative state in comparison to the full slate on Paramount +. We don't know.

We do know that if Paramount + (and CBS all Access before that) had the streaming rights to Yellowstone, it would absolutely get renewed past 5 seasons. Hell its getting renamed and rebranded to do just that minus its star.

So the key factor that trumps everything is how well does it do. SNW is one of Paramount+ strongest shows. It's not its strongest though. Is its overall strength strong enough to propel it further then 5? We currently don't know.

Which doesn't change the fact that it's a show that almost nobody wants.

It's a good landing pad for her. :)

Fact: As shows go on, they become more expensive to produce (especially one as SFX-heavy as SNW).

It's cheaper to create a new show than it is to renew an old show indefinitely.

There's always the option of making streaming film tie-ins.

Star Trek: Lower Decks: Upper Decks?

Wow, this is really surprising. I thought if any of the shows would go the distance it would be LD, as it's animated and seems to have the most vocal supporters.

With the last season airing this fall, that leaves Strange New Worlds as the only Star Trek show post-2025.

Not really.

Oh, if this was the TNG/DS9/VOY era you'd be absolutely right. But the limited number of episodes per season current trek suffers under makes it so what was previously a useful career pipeline for Trek actors is now basically a dead end.

My main issue is, since the final season was already written, we might not get closure on all the running plot lines

weren’t they urging people to watch the show in an effort to stave this off. Maybe they wrote the season more open ended just in-case.

Mike was saying months ago that he'd like a Season 6 and that fans should make noise.
