Gen V (The Boys spino-off/universe) coming Sept 29, 2023

Am I the only one wondering what happened to the one that got kersplatted in the mindscape? He wasn't there when they all woke up, but I didn't see a body either, and none of the other characters so much as brought him up . . .

Yeah well, it's been a second and Sam was going all psycho on Cate, so it was not a high priority but he's dead for sure, just don't think his body exploded like that too.

That was a great episode, didn't expect the Soldier Boy cameo and it was hilarious but we got an insight what happened behind the curtains at Godolkin and the end reveal was WTF?:techman:

Sam and Emma remain the cutest and most awesome couple of the show though, rivalling Hughie/Annie and Frenchie/Kimiko.

That was pretty great.
This episode over all was really good. Literally getting in the characters heads was a nice way to give us some good development for them.
Wow, we finally got a clear answer to what Shetty's up to, and it was not what I expected. From the end it sounds like this is possibly something she's on her own, and not for Vought.

It's interesting because she may be the 'villain' of the show and actually has a lot in common with Butcher. It definitely feels like she's seeking a way to eliminate all Supes.

I am intrigued to see how nuanced they get with her character and motivations where could have two characters with similar goals and morality and in one show they are with the protagonists and in the other the antagonists.

You say that like Butcher isn't a villain on his show either.

I'd say he's more of an anti-hero than outright villain, though he has come pretty close to that line a few times.

He may have all the hallmarks of an anti-hero (crude charisma and trench coat included) but he's most definitely a villain, because Homelander isn't really his nemesis; he is. A villain in his own story, as it were. I'm not saying he's irredeemable or anything, but he's certainly his own worst enemy and he knows it.

But that's pretty much most of the characters on these shows. Kimiko may be the closest thing to an actual hero this IP has, because her motivations are essentially selfless. Even Hughie & Annie are driven by ego and insecurity to a certain extent.

The finale (and episode 7, really) felt horribly rushed. I have no problem in theory with Cate and Sam going full on "kill the humans" but I didn't buy how quickly it happened, and especially not Sam's scene where he turned against Emma. Every escaped prisoner from the Woods decided to indiscriminately slaughter every non-supe they saw didn't sit right either. Bringing in Victoria to resolved the virus storyling and Homelander to resolve the main story felt a bit like cheating too (even though Antony Starr was great as always in his appearance...in fact he and Claudia Doumit out-acted the cast of the spin-off which is a bit of a problem itself.) I prefereed the earlier episodes, they had more of an identity of their own.

And as much as this show and The Boys rightly make fun of certain aspects of the MCU and other superhero properties, the mid credit scene where Butcher shows up just to say "cunts" was just as bad as any "hey look, it's that guy!" mid credit scene in the MCU.

From what I read that scene is actually really important to Season 4, it's supposed to kind of be the jumping off point for Butcher's whole storyline.

IIRC, that comes from the "X-Ray Trivia" that Prime had included with that scene.

On a semi-related note, as much as I like the X-Ray feature Prime provides, it sure can get distracting constantly checking to see why that particular actor looks familiar, or what is that song playing in that scene. It's especially getting bad for me watching the second season of Invincible, where every second character seems to have a recognizable voice, prompting me to constantly check the X-Ray.

I didn't read the X-Ray stuff, one of the producers talked about it in an interview I read on either EW or IGN.

I'm watching this before watching season 4 of The Boys. It is...fine? okay?, but not spectacular. I found myself bored in places. It is as if a Gen X person is writing what they think it is like to be a young person today--which is probably exactly what happened. The use of social media to bully and belittle others is very 2012ish. Social media is so much more complex and brutal in the way that it is used in the real world compared with how it is portrayed in the story. Also the choice of characters powers and traits was meant to parody real world problems/interests of young people, but it feels really forced.

As for the story, I am in episode 6 right now and it still doesn't really feel as if we are approaching the end game of the season. I will see it through, but it has been a bit of a let down TBH.
