Star Trek Canon Problems

Star Trek isn't a historical documentary, it doesn't need to be 100% consistent between eras.

I treat the SNW and TOS Enterprises the same way as a recasting.

It's not, but it is presented in a visual medium and claims to be a single, continuous story. Therefore, it should be as consistent as possible.

Otherwise... just stop trying to make it a single story, and just make a new version. That's ok...

The folks who get up in arms over the fact that the 2024 Enterprise looks nicer than the 1966 Enterprise are very few in number and from a business standpoint not worth worrying about, partly because what they're angry about is highly selective.

Then why does everyone here get up in arms when you have a few folks who say, "I just treat them as separate timelines"?

Problem being, it was never designed to be a single story. Star Trek, at its heart in the 1960's, was an anthology series. It was a different time and audiences had different expectations of TV.

Probably because, most of the time, the reason someone says that is to invalidate a series that has a good number of fans, such as Lower Decks or Discovery. There's nothing inherently insulting about saying "Everything is included". There is something insulting about saying "The show you like isn't good enough to be part of everything else."

So is a different actor playing a character make them a different character? Which universe are we in when it's Robin Curtis or Kirstie Alley playing Saavik? Or the three different actresses who played Ziyal in DS9.

To me personally, the visual differences in SNW are no different than a recasting.

TOS is dated, it needed to visually updated or it would have been made fun of and not taken seriously by newer fans.

I'd first argue, that over the long run, the shows are going to be less valuable as the older audiences pass on. People aren't going to be as engaged by material that is fully dependent on material from sixty years ago.

Second, quality really has nothing to do with it. I like SNW and Lower Decks, but I don't see either as part of the TOS timeline. Too much time has passed, we're a far different group of people both socially and technically for SNW to make sense as a in-timeline prequel to TOS.

We go from super smart/super capable women to, within five or six years in universe, to "captain, I'm frightened" and an officer needing a man's pep talk to go do what needs to be done. We go to miniskirts and women being called "girls". Among other things.

Simply put, the 1960's view of the future is far different than the 2020's view of the future.

Why would you take it as being "not good enough". They're just different, and don't really fit the other stuff that's definitely in a single story. There's nothing wrong with being different. It's not better or worse, it's just its own thing.

OR, on the flip side, if we are going to say that TOS isn't a part of the universe anymore, just do that too. TOS can be its own thing.

It's a very "have your cake and eat it too" situation.

The best solution would have been to just... set these shows at literally any other point in Star Trek.

Huh? No it's not. Or at least that's not how I think. I have no problem with people being fans of DSC or LDS. This isn't about what they think. It's about how I personally feel about the shows. Nobody is trying to 'invalidate' anything. DSC and LDS are canon, just like TOS and TNG are.

No, they don't.

Scream this from the rooftops. I say this as someone who adores TOS and the Original Enteprise.

I know. I've never seen anything from you indicating that.
But you have to acknowledge that much of the loudest wailing and gnashing of teeth is from people objecting to the very existence of those shows. And it's something that goes back to TNG's premiere.

Miniskirts which were valued by the female cast. I never understood the objection.

And people need pep talks all the time to get the job done. Professional sports people, managers, military leaders. While perhaps a different tone, I don't see it far afield of how we currently are.

I want them to try it once just to show fans how dated it is. The TOS Enterprise looks great and stands out as quite dated.
