To me, this 2 minute video is better than anything Alex Kurtzman has done

He merely said that it was his personal opinion that one thing was better than the others. I completely agree with you in general on this, but there's also being way too sensitive in the other direction. If someone says they don't like something you do like, it's not necessarily a personal attack.

I don’t take it as an attack personally. But wording something more carefully could have avoided stirring up a hornets nest.

Also, you’re definitely not a person I want to
argue with. You’re a lovely poster.

I think in general, not just here, if folks took just a little more time to think before they say something, we’d have a lot less problems than we do.

Myself included. I can be highly insensitive sometimes and that’s something I’m working on daily.

@David’s Planet

No offence taken personally and welcome to the board.

The video you shared is definitely impressive and was one of the highlights of last year. Did you know it’s ‘not’ a deepfaked Nimoy, but an actor wearing prosthetics?

I agree. I guess I was just reacting to seeing a new poster saying something pretty mild and then getting a pile-on. I don't like to see people run off.

There is some deepfaking going on though, primarily in the eyes and mouth.

Also, you’re definitely not a person I want to
argue with. You’re a lovely poster.
I see it as discussing not arguing, but that's still very kind of you to say. I feel like I'm an asshole a lot of the time. :D

I honestly find the lookalike thing a bit creepy and uncomfortable.

Otherwise it's fantastic to see a clip of The Ashes of Eden made real.

The best bit of the Roddenberry Archive is exploring all the ships... which include the Kurtzman ones. Why? Because the people involved in the Roddenberry Archive aren't weirdo tribalists like the OP.

That’s about as unhelpful as the thread title is…

For what it’s worth the OP has rolled back a bit and said he could have worded his post better.

That is the trouble with starting topics in the way that the OP did though. Instead of discussing the video in question we have conflict… But throwing more fuel onto the fire like that doesn’t improve matters either.

Oh well anyway, I’m out of this one.

Indeed, I was too harsh and hadn't read the whole thread before replying.

I am however somewhat sick of tribalism in fandom. "Stop liking what I don't like" is a topic for another thread, though.

I very much stand by my point that the lookalikes are uncomfortable. Much like the AI face/AI voice Luke Skywalker in the Disney+ Star Wars shows. Although I'm aware the RA version is mostly makeup.

I don't understand the conflict. The OP didn't insult people who likes the Kurtzman era. He is just using it as a point of example to show how this Roddenberry clip is better than anything being done by the Kurtzman shows. I disagree. I mean I do think it's better than Discovery and maybe Lower Decks to a degree but it is also only like 2 plus minutes long so what that even represents? I don't know.

As long as nobody is knocking fans or calling them stupid for liking Kurtzman Trek I don't see any major issue. There is a difference in knocking a show and knocking the fans and heck he doesn't even go into long details about why he dislikes Kurtzman trek so it's not even some big effort to tear Kurtzman Trek a new one.

Thank you. I really appreciate it. I was warned about people like this. I mean, I got called a "tribalist wierdo" for this. I expected more from a Star Trek forum.

Where is that even implied? I just don't understand the hostility. Tribalist weirdo is insulting when you have no idea who I am and I honestly expected better from a Star Trek forum.

I shy away from a lot of boards and reddit because you have to be careful how you step around stating your opinion. It's an opinion. I love Star Trek to death. I'm obsessed with it. I passionately dislike modern Trek and what's happening with the franchise. That doesn't mean I like Trek any less or more than anyone else and it shouldn't offend.

We've all stepped in it before, no harm, no foul.

I just think I'd be more interested in why this speaks to you versus using it to slam the stuff produced by CBS (which I find very hit or miss, like a lot of Star Trek).

Believe it or not, this is just more of an instinctive reaction to your opening post. Way too many people have driven by with the express purpose of shitting on what is being made now. With no real rhyme or reason beyond "this sucks!!!".

You joined Friday, give people a chance to get to know you. We were all the "new asshole" here at some point in our lives.

It is insulting and the member was called out for it.

The member did then concede that they were too harsh.

I think it's more a matter of starting a conversation in the right way.

Saying, "look at this really cool video, I like it for X and Y reasons" is one thing.

Saying, "This 2 minute video is better than several seasons of various TV shows that many of you may like" is another.

Nobody should have called you a weirdo and you're not, but just imagine (say) starting a thread in the TNG forum that goes "I think this 2 minute video is better than the entirety of TNG". Of course there would be some people who didn't like that and you'd get some kneejerk reactions.

As I said, it would have been entirely possible for you to start a thread about why you like the video, what's impressive to you and how it makes you feel. There's no reason to add the caveat of 'X is better than Y". Surely the production in question stands on it's own two feet without the need for pithy comparisons?

Man, is there something in the water this weekend?

The OP will learn our culture (or not) eventually. In the meantime, let's bring it down a notch or two.

What is expected?

Fandom, sadly, gets divided along weird lines. I was much maligned as a youth for liking TOS but not TNG. Others like other shows and say everything is not good.

As I said, I'd love to hear why you love that 2 minute clip, rather than comparing it to Kurtzman's whole track record.

Of course but it's the needless comparison game.

Just tell us why you like it.

If I could shake your hand, I would.

Dude. It's Star Trek. We're all late to the party. Meaning, we're here discussing a show that came out in 1966. Saying anyone is 'a bit late to the party' is kind of silly no? I mean, you'd have to delete 98% of the threads on here with that philosophy.

And had you not opened with "new Star Trek is shit", which is THE MOST BORING TAKE IN THE WORLD, so much so that it's literally been a fandom cliche for almost 40 years, I wouldn't have bothered. But this is easily fixed. Cheeribye.

Of course but it's the needless comparison game.

Just tell us why you like it.

The reason people compare things is usually because they want to let people know the thing they like is a example of quality that want to become the standard next to the thing they are implying is lacking in quality. Granted people tend to be hyperbolic as well in exaggerating how great something is. I think I would have had a bigger issue is if the Roddenberry clip was just a setup for a very long winded diatribe about how bad all Kurtzman Trek is but instead the Roddenberry clip is used as a example of not just it's greatness but also a template all of how all Trek should be following.
