Just Started SNW RE: Uhura

The Creators of the show also said that Data was created by unknown aliens, in atonement for having accidentally killed the entire population of the colony where he was found. And we all know what happened to that "Word of God."

But... those are the characters. If the writers don't want to use those characters, there's not actual reason to bring those characters in. Literally nobody from TOS needed to be involved short of Spock.

But they ARE using the characters, and Paramount has been abundantly clear this is NOT a reboot. So... the writers are actually not doing a great job with some of these characters.

As a woman-identifying human approaching 70 years alive on this planet, I was and continue to be quite comfortable bringing these characters up to speed with current cultural sensibilities. If it had been created today this is what we'd have gotten, right? The Orville, but with characters we already knew and loved.

Is there something that makes things incompatible?

No. It was more in response to the idea that Uhura would/could be something different by the time TOS rolls around. No... she can't/won't, because she's the same exact person from TOS.

Totally agreed... they probably SHOULD have just made something new to update it to the modern day.

Paramount chose to NOT do that, and EXCPLICITLY made this a DIRECT prequel to TOS and has been ADAMANT that the characters we see in this show are the SAME EXACT people as in TOS.

Your problem isn't with me, it's with the creators of the show.

I agree, this should have been a reboot, unlinked to anything to in the past. That's not what they did. I didn't make it that way?

People want to have their cake and eat it too here.

So, Uhura in SNW isn't the same as Uhura in TOS? So that means the Enterprise isn't the Enterprise from TOS? I've been told many times i'm wrong, and that the SNW Enterprise IS the exact same ship as the Enterprise from TOS, because that's what Paramount says.

We're not having a problem...

Sounds like there are several problems, because when I point out what the creators of the show have said about their work... I seem to be told i'm wrong and that's not how it should be.

I agree... that's not how it should be, but that's how it is.

No. We just think you're wrong. But we're enjoying the show, so no problem.

I mean that's great. I'm happy for you. I'm also generally enjoying the show.

I'm just... stating factually correct information. We have a defined path for these characters, as per the creators of the show.

If I state that James Kirk's middle initial is "R." I'm stating the same kind of "factually correct information" - by which I mean, a bit of previous fictional continuity that's been superseded by later stories - and it's just as unimportant now.

Sure it's absolute reasonable that some minor details can be tweaked over time. (or easily explained away, like that one... it was a mental projection from an unstable guy surging with newfound power... it's pretty safe to take that as unreliable information.)

It just sounds like people here are thinking we have some sort of total reboot here where anything can happen, which SHOULD totally be what this all is, but Paramount disagrees with us.

I apologize for discussing a TV show on a forum devoted to that TV show. But also, fair enough and continue on with the conversation otherwise. No reason to continue on this track.

I find that people who regularly post on a Star Trek internet bulletin board, who then use the 'It's just a TV show' card when they don't like that other fans question things, to be quite rich.
