What are some of your favourite non star trek hero ships?

Thirded. Still can't believe the original intent was for the big bulbous thing to be the flight deck/front of the ship, rather than the engine. Worked out for the best, though...

I'm also partial to Scorpio. A very intricate 4' model was built, but they did all the effects work with it on videotape so all the detail was turned into blobby mush, save for one or two magazine poster spreads that begin to do that model some justice. Amazing that spread was never scanned and used on any official B7 channel for image download as wallpaper, it really looks terrific for what it is (a spacehopper in need of some repairs, hence the more utilitarian look... the interior really changes the mood. As much as Liberator's interior could define the late-70s (the only thing missing would be booze, ciggies, white powder, and of course the morning doves and horses brought into Studio 54 that one night, but they'd make a big mess), one could say how Scorpio has sort of a punk-esque edge - like the crew's new costumes... and thankfully no horse doodoo... )

I love the exterior of Scorpio, the interior not as much

According to Producer Vere Lorimer, the Scorpio's bridge was intended to resemble the look and feel of the Nostromo; being run down, with steam and oil leaking from pipes. But the BBC instead wanted a well lit, clean bridge for the cameras.
A similar thing happened a couple of years later with Dr. Who "Warriors of the Deep", JNT and the director wanted the interior of the underwater base to look more like an oil refinery, dark and claustrophobic; instead the BBC insisted on a well lit, spacious set, which exposed the flaws in the Sea Devils and Silurian costumes.

Accept no substitute...

The interior was definitely done on a tight budget, possibly made with bits of at THHGTTG's ship set cut up for part of it (just not the turntable), but I still love it. Must be the textures.

Cool info, thanks! The run-down look definitely would have helped...

Yeah, the videotape camera in use often had problems with darker sets and rendered too much noise. Instead of fiddlefaffing with lighting to get a balance, they just set the lumens to 15-million and flick the switch as it apparently saved on the time otherwise needed to do proper lighting, not needing film, and other factors. It was a generally common practice from what I recall...

The Myrka in particular suffered from the brightly-lit base. In dark corridors, it would have worked. But in brightly lit flashy modern 80s sets, nothing would stand a chance no matter how well made. That said, season 21's frequent use of bright sets did have a certain futuristic look.

Of note, also speaking of Doctor Who where they were using the 1" PAL videotape by then as well*, 1989's "Ghost Light" is a particularly great example of excessive noise due to dark sets. There were problems galore due to the low lighting and, indeed, having watched the blu-ray with the deleted scenes added that make the story almost coherent as a result**.... and do note that the deleted scenes came from a VHS copy of a timecode but cleaned up... the VHS footage melds together disturbingly well with the original VT source, thanks to all the noise cleanup algorithms used rendering everything softer as a result. (the differences are still there, just not as pronounced.)

* the 2" stuff generally looks better but from what I recall reading the benefit of 1" was postproduction editing, and for another tangent I'm to this day floored by how terrific the noise removal processes are, since Colin Baker's coat should otherwise have loads of fuzzy noise as the reds degrade the worst. Yet more often than not look near-pristine.

** why this is the only story whose original masters ended up deleted but at least the VHS copy still existed

Yes I'd heard that before about Scorpio, and lord sometimes I wonder if I should just turn the contrast down on Warriors and it'll look so much better

The Ark (The Starlost)

I've watched a few episodes on YouTube and, I want to like the ship; it's reminiscent of the Valley Forge from Silent Running; however, the way some of the domes are positioned, I can't believe some people wouldn't have looked up at some point in their journey and wondered what that other dome was just above their head.
Unless, while the domes may look transparent to us, the viewer, there was some sort of artificial day/night with a sun/moon
You know, the more I think about, the less it makes sense.
The initial volunteers knew they were embarking on a generational voyage; why didn't they pass that information down to their descendants? Or, was it just that one dome that Keir Dullea and his friends came from?
From the episodes I watched, some of the people they encounter know that they're on a spaceship. Why did the people in that one dome forget?

USS Sulaco from Aliens, Nova Class Dreadnaught Babylon 5, White Star Babylon 5, Beliskner Asgard ship in Stargate, Decepticon Warship Transformers the movie, Nadesico B from Martian Successor Nadesico, Victory Class Destroyer Crusade, Starbug Red Dwarf. I could go on and on really....

Close enough.

In SW you got the Falcon, the ISD, and then everybody else. Throw the X-wing in there to be polite.

Yeah, a lot of things didn't entirely make sense in the show. It was an intriguing concept though. It sounded like it had a very troubled production, so some of it may have been explained in trimmed/removed episodes or maybe just in future seasons.

Not sure how it would have turned out in the end.

Though I'd read the BBC cameras of the era really didn't have good low light performance (might have applied to all tv cameras of the era).

Both versions of Galactica are amazing. Easily the top non Trek ships.

Halo ships are good too. Probably do functional better than any other sci-fi.
