Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

Keanu Reeves might have not been a huge star yet, but Laurance Fishburne had already been in quite a few big movies by the time he did The Matrix. But it was a completely original story as far as I can tell, with no preexisting source material, and wasn't part of a franchise or series. So it fits that way, and it's probably arguable if Lawrence Fishburne was a big enough name to draw in a big audience. I'm trying not to be quite as strict with some of my criteria now.
 
Fishburne might have been in more movies, even big time movies, but only in bit parts. Reeves, on the other hand, had starred in Point Break, Speed and Devil's Advocate before The Matrix. So, chances are, more people knew Reeves, and as he was considered a heartthrob back in the day (once he got over being limited to Bill & Ted), he might very well have drawn a couple of female attendees to see his new movie.

A point of 24 karat pure pedantry, in social sciences, a generation is circa 15 years. So it’s actually THREE generations since Star Wars (1977) was released.

I’ve already got my coat.
 
I've always heard a generation is about 25 years. The concept of a generation to me is the time it takes for babies to start bringing other babies into the world. 15 is much too low for that (at least in modern American society).

Related to Spider-Man movies, I am still eagerly awaiting the follow-up to Across the Spider-Verse. Both of those movies have been awesome, and Miles Morales is rightfully gaining popularity.
 
On a separate note, has there been any word recently on how Silk: Spider Society is progressing?

On a side note to that separate note: I'm still hoping that Sony and Disney would allow Cindy Moon to team up with the new Agents of ATLAS, and/or with South Korea's Tiger Division, should either or the latter ever be added to the MCU.

I think it's fair to say the Matrix cast were largely not, at the time, A-list stars. Maybe "relative unknowns" is stretching it a bit.

When Iron Man hit theaters in 05 (or whatever) the genre had previously been basically Spider-Man and X-Men

Not only were they not really box office draws but I recall a degree of scepticism and disbelief that Keanu was doing another cyberpunk film involving downloads to or from the brain after the flop of Johnny Mnemonic a few years earlier

For me, i didn't see the Matrix for the stars.... it was the commercial. I am not sure if was Super Bowl spot (i can't find that specific version on YouTube) or one in the actual theater... but it was with dialogue from Morpheus... and i went into the movie fully expecting Morpheus to be the villain -- and came out LOVING the character, and being a metaphor for my work as a volunteer youth leader (hence my user name -- and apparently someone else at the time).


And for Marvel -- it was slow for me. I think i did see Iron Man in theaters I skipped Thor entirely because i thought it was going to be stupid. But when i saw it on Redbox, i actually liked it. And by the time of the Avengers, i was all in for anything branded Marvel.

Oh, and @The Knappos -- thanks for making me feel not just old, but real old! :devil::guffaw:

Oh right, I forgot he'd done all of those before The Matrix.

These stars paying 10% to their agent should throw a tip or something to the local comic book store nerd when making these decisions and get an informed opinion.

It doesn't even have to be Sonyverse or anything, Kumail Nanjiani took everyone at Marvel blowing smoke up his ass way too seriously then needed therapy when The Eternals didn't shoot to the moon the way he expected. So many celebs seeing big $$$ in their eyes when they hear "Marvel".
