Highlander Reboot/Prequel Anticipation Thread

Nah, just do like Duncan MacLeod...live life large, and use your real name freely for hundreds of years. No problem. ;)

Back before governments started to keep records electronically you could do that if you switched locations for a couple of decades and waited before all the people you knew had died. It is a plot point in the movie though that Duncan assumes the identities of passed infants ( yet didn't think of trying to change his handwriting for the signature, technology wins this one ;)).

I am positively excited about the reboot with Cavill. For one he knows his way around movie fights with swords, so it should look spectacular with modern fight choreography and the special effects will of course also look better. As to the original charm and what made it so great - that will be much harder to achieve. Try to find someone with the charisma of Connery in his prime ( older Sean Connery was amazing) or the seamless blending between present and past scenes ( though that's just a technical thing and easily replicated yet felt so awesome). I don't know if they will keep close to the original script or do their own thing - i'd prefer the latter and for them to make their own movie within the framework of Immortals battling each other through the centuries.

Modern fight choreography may be cool, but then there's what happened in Highlander II... Lambert and Ironside, they lost or broke their prop swords, so they just went at it fighting with real swords, big, heavy and sharp, all day long because it was cool as fuck and they were getting off on the danger high.

It sounds like the director who could not control their special kind of crazy, had hours of footage, but wound up using just ten minutes of it for the movie.

That was Connor, not Duncan. Connor at least tried to cover his tracks somewhat. Duncan didn't seem to care too much who he ran into that might know him. Sometimes he'd just use the old "Oh, you knew my grand/father" excuse when needed.

Yeah but they went back to prop swords when Lambert almost lost a finger. And IIRC, Ironside got his face smashed in pretty badly at one point too.

Yes, it was Connor stealing identities in the movie. The show has an episode where Fitz and Duncan broke into a government building to create new identities, complaining about how hard it is now vs the good old days.

The less we speak of the abomination that was Highlander 2 ( and all movies that came after) the better. Actors really getting into a role like this is cool though.

Ah sorry, misread that. My bad.

I quite like 2, it was a fun movie, i mean Connery playing a spaniard with a scottish accent exploding while the bagpipes played the irish hymn amazing grace as he helps is the french actor playing McCloud to escape, .......i dare anyone not to get a chuckle from the movie. Lol

To be fair.... with a movie, COnnor really had one main alternate identity (Russell Nash for "today", and COnner from Childhood, and his time with his wife Heather), so it wasn't hard to keep track of.

With Duncan, and with his show in syndication... it would be harder for the average viewer to keep track., with however many identities he needed to make.

i wonder if anyone had thought about creating some fake birth certificates later on, so that an immortal and his friends might be able to make it to the "next life" a little easier? Certainly that would be a huge issue in 2024, that might need to be addressed.

I just gotta say.. when Highlander 2 came out, me and my college roommate walked at least a mile in the snow to go see it.... needless to say, totally not worth it.

The only good thing i can say was the scene where Ramirez and McLeod break into the facility by getting shot at, and bragging about who go t shot the most... that was hilarious. Perfect use of the concept

"Just look at my splendid waistcoat!"

Connor had a whole series of false identities. Each one taking the name of a dead baby and leaving his inheritance to the next. That's how Brenda caught him.

But that part was basically one or two scenes... you didn't have him being called 5 different things in the movie, just 2. ANd that's very manageable in 1 film. Trying to keep track of that in 22 episodes? A little much for the average viewer, i think.

think i saw the sequel before the original.

There was a series called "Lights, Camera Action that was a behind the scences on movies narrated by Leonard Nimoy" and one episode featured Highlander 2 so dad decided to rent the video.

One thing on the original. Maybe CTV Sci-Fi had a very worn out copy but last time I saw it, it looked very dull and washed out visually. Might have been filmed that way but found it very off putting.

Sean Connery was awesome in pretty much anything he did, so yeah, hard to top. Although I think if they were to cast someone like Gramam McTavish, I think he could be suitable.

So, speaking of Ramirez....

Let's say this will be a reboot with many of the original characters.
Who would you like as Ramirez? The Kurgan? Brenda?

That's all with a big 'what if' ofcourse.

Given that Cavill is a massive dude he needs a villain to match him so i'd go with Dave Bautista for The Kurgan - good actor and by now a recognized name. If they stick to the character backgrounds Ramirez should be played by a middle-eastern actor instead of a Scot ;) but i'm blanking on one right now. I actually don't care about the character of Brenda, for me she always was the most boring aspect of the movie as she basically was only the damsel in distress while events happened around her over which she had no influence.

Using her deep knowledge of sword-making and a bucket of tenacity, Brenda Wyatt dug through scattered evidence until she found out about a secret race of immortal beings living among us.

She may become a damsel in distress by definition in the final act, but it's not her only role in the narrative. (I'm not arguing that you should like her, or declare her 'not boring'...just arguing against her being only a damsel. :))

Or go for the opposite.

Like a child?

Or a woman?

A crass disgusting thug amazon who had her way with Heather.

5 hundred years old, and he does not know know what a Lesbian is.

"Oh, honey, sit down, and I'll explain it you."

Or how about Rami Malek... and actual Egyptian but could look like he is younger than Cavill ... which would make for an interesting dynamic... i am confident that Rami could do a wiser than his years personality

Okay...

What about, with approval of his estate, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury (again) as the Kurgin, singing the theme song as he lays down on The Highlander?

God's.

That might mean that this immortal used to be Freddie Mercury, until he faked his death and created a new identity...

Which sounds a little crass.

So how about an earlier fight in 1980 where Freddie Mercury scalps Elton John played by Taron Egerton, and it never grows back?

Graham McTavish as Ramierez would be a callback to a Scot playing an Egyptian masquerading as a Spaniard.

What about Alexander Siddig as Ramirez? He definitely has the acting chops, and the proper ethnicity. He can be serious or funny as needed, as well.

I think for the Kurgan, the best thing they could do is find some Eastern European or Russian actor who is relatively unknown, fuggin' HUGE, and scary looking. Make him authentic. The problem with someone like Bautista is that he's too well known, and half the people will look at him and see Drax.
