Canon events that were elaborated in the novels, comics and games

Speak of the devil, and he shall appear! This week's Star Trek: Defiant annual issue from IDW Publishing visually depicted Natasha Yar
(the prime timeline incarnation) saving colonists from Carnelians (which Sela witnesses courtesy of a stolen chrono-deflector from Korath), as mentioned by Jean-Luc Picard in TNG 4.06 "Legacy".

Here are pages 21 to 23 showing the Carnelians themselves.

I depicted a different version of that event in the climactic chapters of The Buried Age.

I wonder if the comic author had read Buried Age, or perhaps the Memory-Beta page about the evacuation.

I wonder if the comic author had read Buried Age, or perhaps the Memory-Beta page about the evacuation.

I suspect the latter is more likely. If they'd read the novel, they'd probably try to avoid copying it and do their own thing (which they clearly did for the most part). But if a reference to Caitians were presented out of context in a Beta article about the Carnelians or whatever, the comics writer might not have known where it came from.

According to Google Books the only mention of Capella IV in the novel is McCoy saying "I just finished a tour of duty on Capella IV. It wasn't exactly what I'd call satisfying." Not really an elaboration. Google Books search results are not 100% reliable, so is there something else that I missed?
As I recall, there was a scene where McCoy is very frustrated at the Capellans' disinterest in medicine. That's why he's ready to accept Kirk's offer to serve as CMO of the Enterprise.

Turns out the scene of McCoy being frustrated about the Capella mission is from Constitution, not Enterprise. I'll add it to the list although the only really new information is that the Capellan infant mortality rate is 16%.

The scene places McCoy's assignment to Capella IV more precisely in time.

Also the entire Federation-Cardassian war (of which I am still sort of bummed never to get a proper novel about - from O'Brien's or anyone's perspective) qualifies.
It's popped up in little bits over the years, often with dating inconsistencies to boot. Usually regarding Setlik III.

Seems like James Swallow was well on his way to being able to do such a book, in theory - and had set up some background in the Seven Deadly Sins anthology (albeit set rather late in the timeframe of the conflict, circa 2362) also.

Oh, the depth and breadth of Star Trek lore that spans beyond the screen into the novels, comics, and games is like a treasure trove for us Trekkies! Let's warp into some of these events that got the full treatment in non-canon material but were only hinted at or briefly touched upon in the series and movies.

Starting off with the alternate Tasha Yar's failed escape from Romulan custody—this is a storyline that tugged at our hearts during "Redemption II." The Star Trek: Defiant Annual takes this tale further, giving us a deeper look into the challenges she faced. It's the kind of story that makes you appreciate the complexity of Tasha's character even more. Then there's the Battle of Axanar, a pivotal moment that was mentioned in "Whom Gods Destroy" and got fleshed out in various sources like The Four Years War and Garth of Izar. Axanar is crucial for understanding the strategic genius of captains like Kirk and the kind of Starfleet legends that shaped the Federation's ethos.

Battle of Betazed in "In the Pale Moonlight" was a turning point in the Dominion War, and The Ceremony of Innocence is Drowned dives deep into the psychological and strategic impacts of this battle, showing how dire the situation was for the Federation and its allies. And who can forget the Earth-Romulan War, hinted at in "Balance of Terror"? This conflict is elaborated across multiple sources, including The Romulan Way and Beneath the Raptor's Wing, painting a vivid picture of the first major challenge the young Federation faced. It's a saga of desperation, innovation, and the forging of Starfleet's principles.

The Eugenics Wars are another fascinating aspect. Briefly mentioned in "Space Seed," these events are thoroughly explored in The Eugenics Wars: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh volumes. These novels give us a chilling look into the ambitions and downfall of one of Starfleet's most formidable adversaries, Khan.

Moving to a more personal story, Gary Mitchell's saving of Kirk and their deep friendship explored in titles like Star Trek #64 and The Autobiography of James T. Kirk add layers to Kirk's character and his early Starfleet days that we don't see on screen. The Tomed Incident mentioned in "The Neutral Zone" and explored in Serpents Among the Ruins provides a critical backdrop to the uneasy peace between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire, setting the stage for the complex political maneuvers that define their interactions. And let's not overlook the heart-wrenching Tarsus IV Massacre, which profoundly affected Kirk as revealed in "The Conscience of the King." Works like Drastic Measures and The Autobiography of James T. Kirk delve into the psychological scars left by this tragedy, offering a glimpse into the events that shaped Kirk's moral compass.

It's these stories, expanded in novels, comics, and games, that enrich the Star Trek universe, giving us a galaxy teeming with history, heroism, and the ever-present challenge of living up to the ideals of the Federation. They're a testament to the enduring power of Star Trek's storytelling, capable of exploring the human condition in ways that are as varied as the stars themselves. And for the incidents yet to be elaborated, like the Battle of Klach D'Kel Brakt or Kirk using the Cochrane deceleration maneuver, they're like uncharted territories on the star map, waiting for imaginative writers to explore. The Star Trek universe is vast, and there's always more to discover, more to learn, and more to inspire us. Live long and prosper, fellow Trekkies!

battle of Cheron also gets covered in Enterprise: To Brave the Storm
it is not compatible with the depiction in Starfleet: Year One, but that isn't very surprising given that pretty much that entire novel got retconned by the show Enterprise.

Very nice.

How about the Enterprise D bridge refit between AGTs and Generations? Not mentioned but an explanation is given in TNG book Rogue Saucer (hellishly fun read).

The 2017 Star Trek Online mission "Survivor" did not depict it directly, but gave a different take: Sela's father did not kill quantum orphan Tasha but in actuality exiled her to the same penal colony holding Richard Castillo, where they lived out their days until quantum orphan T'nae's presence killed them all not long before 2410.

Thanks. I remember watching a playthrough of that mission on YouTube. It was an interesting twist, but I didn't really understand why alternate T'Nae's presence was causing temporal anomalies. If it's because there were two of her in the galaxy, then why didn't alternate Tasha also cause temporal anomalies in the time period when the other Tasha was still alive?

I can't remember the details of the specific events, but A Stitch in Time covered quite a few events from his life Garak referred to throughout DS9, and the Terok Nor trilogy covered quite a few events from the occupation that were discussed in episodes.

Whereas I believe the Stellar Cartography book retells the battle - in a way that is largely duplicated in Federation: The First 150 Years also?

And is a bit incompatible - broadly - with several of those accounts.

I didn't want to create a whole new thread for this, but maybe someone here can help.

Did anyone read a novel in the early 90s set during the late classic movie era (either before or after The Undiscovered Country, not sure which) that begins with the crew of the Enterprise-A having a get together on Scotty's boat? I have been looking everywhere as I checked it out at the library as a kid but never finished it, and I have seen no evidence of it's existence since. I would love to read it now that I'm older. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!
