Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

It is pretty daft (And I say this as someone who is annoyed enough to not be watching the show atm. Annoyed might be overselling it. But put off enough.) RTD doesn’t like to keep companions around for long anyway. One series and some guest shots basically, aside from Rose, and that’s explained by her being the carry over for a new new Doctor and the early days of the revival.

This is the downside when you film so far in advance I guess, but frankly having a decent turnover of companions isn't a bad thing, God I wish they could have lose Ryan and Yaz long before they did!

One big point to make, for the first time ever the Doctor and companion will both be person's of colour (unless there's a third person making up the Tardis team of course)

I have it on absolute authority--from a totally untrustworthy source--that Millie's departure from Doctor Who will be brief. She'll eventually return as the 16th Doctor. Yeah, I'm sure that's what I heard, right on then.

It's rather weird that we already know who the next companion is, before Millie Gibson even does one series, let alone two. That feels like taking away from her in a way. I really enjoyed Varada Sethu in Andor and I look forward to seeing what she does in Doctor Who, but I want to focus on Gibson now.

Also, knowing that Sethu is going to be the next companion makes me lament yet again how her Andor co-star (and in-show romantic partner) Faye Marsay should've been the next companion after "Last Christmas" instead bringing back Clara.

I mean… we do t even know if the fourteenth Doctor has actually left yet either. Or if the Tardis now has two souls. Or if a Black British actor is ever going to get the chance to just *be* the Doctor or must always be some magical McGuffin to a White British Actor in the role first, or indeed all the time. Or, and in order to lighten things up, if Jamie left a selection of kilts in the wardrobe.

The BBC will probably come out with a Press Release on Monday talking about how her departure was planned from the beginning and no one will believe it, since it's exactly what they said about Eccleston.

The irony being this time it's probably true.

This is the double-edged sword of banking episodes so far in advance. Still, I was surprised when it initially looked like Ruby was going to be in more than one season, giving RTD's prior style of never having a Doctor/Companion team last more than a year, in contrast to Moffat and Chibnall clearly preferring to keep things stable as much as possible.

I suppose Eccleston quit early enough that it'd be impossible to know, but is there any indication whether or not Rose would've been in the second season if there hadn't been a new Doctor?

Though as has been pointed out, if Clara has left as planned we probably don't get Heaven Sent

Ruby's probably not even gonna be gone, gone. I full expect a Journey's End-level team up of 15's companions by his last season.

I don't see where Millie Gibson leaving is a big deal, lots of companions have only lasted one season.

It isn't.

But the usual mob are spinning it into a reason to attack the series, helped along by the tabloids and websites that either don't know or pretend not to know anything about how long Companions tend to stay on the show.

While I agree it is unfortunate Faye Marsay didn't get to be a companion, given the trajectory of her career since, I'd say things worked out just fine for her.

RTD did express a similar concern in The Writer's Tale when talking about it was announced Catherine Tate was returning to be the full time companion in the fourth season, that because of the timing everyone would think Freema Agyeman was fired despite the fact that the ending to S3 was written well in advance of deciding to bring Donna back.

An alternate ending was filmed for Parting of the Ways with Eccleston staying in the role which would have instead been a cliffhanger setting up Rose's storyline for the second season. Though it's been debated over the years as to whether this was in fact an alternate plan for Eccleston staying or if it was just intended to be used in the press screenings for the episode in order to keep the regeneration secret for the actual broadcast of the episode.

I don't know about that. Given death and mortality are such a central theme to Capaldi's second season, I get the impression that likely would have been the case regardless if Clara or Shona were the companion. With that in mind, I suspect the final three episode arc might well be the same anyway.

They've preparing for a few days of public shooting coming up this week, so it'll to see who does or doesn't turn up for it.
