Another movie that will never get made is announced!

Depending on how many decades earlier, it can easily be prime as well, before the Nero-Kelvin split
Luckily Guinan not remembering Picard from "Times Arrow" in PICARD season 2 (plus Simon Pegg's assertion the Kelvin timeline could diverge pre 2233) gives a good out from this not having to be taken as canon to the original timeline.

And if it says Khan was the 21st century that would help just as well!

That was because they were in the Confederation timeline

Ok I'm following the reaction to the JJ Abrams prequel announcement by one of the people that discussed the Mark A Altman Earth-Romulan War script a few months back... they aren't connecting the two together.

The timing with the recent news of possible mergers and sales reminds me of the investors call where they had Abrams say Trek 4 would be out within a year when the cast hadn't even been told of it.

Pumping the value.
You said it. This movie is as likely to happen as Star Trek 4 and the Picard movie. They just want to look impressive for rich people with no actual clue.

The only Star Trek movie that will be made? The Paramount+ TV movie starring Georgiou.

Prove me wrong, Paramount.

what Mark A. Altman Earth-Romulan war?

So it’s an Enterprise reboot?!
Who would you recast as Archer and his crew?

Perhaps they are going to make this movie about a young Kirk, a bit like how they made the first Star Wars prequels about that young Anakin guy? The movie can follow delinquent Kirk as he steals cars and gets up to general no good in Iowa. They could also rewrite how Kirk and Spock first meet; they could have their first encounter in a childhood behavioral rehabilitation centre, as Sarek could have been based as a diplomat on Earth at Starfleet Command during this time period. As adults, they may forget ever having met which explains JJ-Verse canon. There is also the potential for a young recast Michael Burnham to appear too as Spock’s sister. :techman:

Young Kirk could have his interest in cars turned in to a positive by an older Archer or other familiar figure, with Kirk turning from a life of gangs and street crime to race cars around the streets of San Francisco - it could be a bit like a ‘Fast and the Furious’ film. There could even be a scene where Kirk drives past the Academy and looks longingly at the building and all of the cadets as dramatic emotive music by Michael Giacchino plays and JJ Abrams directs the scene in slow motion with subtle lense flares and car exhaust sounds. This distraction makes Kirk lose this particular race, but it gives him an aspiration for a future in Starfleet. :D

Star Trek 4 "active development" be like

So is this a revived version of the Jendresen script? I always thought that was dreadful and not Star Trek at all - it was a humourless, unironic version of Starship Troopers crossed with Top Gun. I don't understand why the Treksperts guys have such a nerd boner for it.

But it won't happen anyway so I'm not going to get too worked up about it.

Technically, a JJ-verse prequel *could* also be set in the future 24th century rather than decades earlier in the 23rd century. Such a prequel could deal with the prevention of the destruction of the Romulan sun/Hobus in the 24th century, which would of course have repercussions ‘decades earlier’ in the JJ-verse 2230’s. This would make this movie installment both a sequel and a prequel rolled in to one. The special event movie could have an all star cast of legacy characters spanning generations, working together across timelines and multiverses! :techman:

Also, a prequel set far enough in the JJ-verse past, before 2233, would actually be prime timeline, not JJ.

I doubt it'd be that at all, if they do the Romulan wars they'd hopefully do something more than a script clearly designed to re-use ENT sets and assets.

I'm also hoping it would be it's own thing, not tied to ENT or existing continuity. It wouldn't take a lot to have the Kelvinverse be a totally separate thing and redo the past. Or perhaps it'll be like Best Destiny, where a teenage Kirk goes on an adventure.

But again, they're probably paying a guy to do an outline hoping for big returns from excited investors and with no intent of making a movie. Again.

what Mark A. Altman Earth-Romulan war?
Mark A Altman is the co-host of the Inglorious Treksperts podcast and has written several behind the scenes books. Their podcast a few months back talked about rumors of a reboot Earth-Romulan War script making the rounds at Paramount.

Erik Jendresen co-wrote the last Mission Impossible film, which presumably is where the connection came in for Paramount.

But given how that movie kinda flopped and they are reportedly retooling the sequel, perhaps they should look elsewhere. Seth Grahame-Smith is said to be writing the Star Trek script so perhaps there is no link with Jendresen after all.

Ok, just listened to that Inglorious Treksperts podcast and the precise rumour it that it is called Star Trek: The Beginning, and it is a prequel involving the Romulans, but it is not related to the Jendresen script. Supposedly it's set right after First Contact.

If true, this would make a hell of a lot more sense. My immediate thought was that sources were discussing this as 'decades before the 2009 film' because that would be the easiest term for many people to understand, and that it would be set in the Primeverse by virtue of the Kelvinverse not having started yet. I hope this pans out as such (lol if it gets made lol).
