Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Does seem kind of random. On the plus side, there are some interesting issues built into the premise, such as the idea of sharing the Earth with the previous inhabitants. But, it's not a spinoff I was anxious to see. It might make a nice miniseries. Not sure about an ongoing program though.

And the title does have eight words.

"Fantasy-action saga"?! I guess that's the way it's heading though.

I know I'm just echoing others but, so random!

Are we certain this isn't going to feature Fourteen?

Given how many UNIT stories are coming up in Series 14/15 (fight me) I'm still wondering how many excuses they'll come up for 14 & Donna never being there when the Earth needs saving.

And I'm wondering if this is what Bad Wolf have been building sets in Malta for? If you're planning a series with a lot of sea based action you'll want somewhere nicer than a wet and windy South Wales beach.

Yeah, he can't be off scuba diving all the time...

Wouldn't have been so bad if he didn't have his own TARDIS as well.

I kinda hope I'm wrong but I still can't shake the idea that RTD wants to keep Ncuti as long as possible and is building in the occasional Tennant led limited series to ensure there's always Doctor Who even if Ncuti takes a year off to do other stuff. Obviously this is a mad conspiracy theory and I'm just nuts, but even if this isn't in RTD's thinking now, given he's built in the notion that Tennant can come back any time I do wonder how long it is before that happens.

I kinda hope you’re right! Why do you hope you’re wrong?

He’s just banking some Doctors like it’s high stakes poker — he’s sad Moffat holds the record for largest number of broadcast Doctors written for, and the most in a row (a royal flush) and then even Chibnall played a hand in Power.
(Moff has written on screen for 4,5,8,9,10,11,12 and a bonus 1 with a different actor, and the jokers wild War Doctor)

Just feels a trifle unfair on Ncuti, while at the same time reinforcing the notion that Tennant is the forever Doctor and all these other guys are just brief stand-ins.
I can understand that but then again it might allow him flexibility if he wanted to remain in the role but take the occasional break, like Tennant himself did. And we the viewers would continue to get DW while he did.

Just feels wrong, having two Doctors in the universe at once would be like having two Bonds, let the current guy (or gal) stand on their own two feet.

And heaven forbid Ncuti's ratings started to slide but Tennant's stayed high!

All very hypothetical obviously, and yes I know I'm being a tad hypocritical because while I like Tennant I don't love him the way I do Matt and Capaldi so maybe I would be singing a very different tune if Matt Smith had been Fourteen.

Forgetting Name and Day of the Doctor? He’s written for (then) all of them

I was trying only to count times not using archival clips xD Basically when words written have been said by the actors. Uncle Terrance may still be the GOAT in that regard, what with the Five Doctors, but he is not a Player anymore, alas.
I also didn’t count Tales Of The Tardis, because they weren’t broadcast. (Night of the Doctor was, via Red Button)

I saw in an interview online with RTD that he has enough story ideas/material for three seasons with Ncuti as the Doctor. Now, whether or not he'll get three seasons, is another question entirely.

Well given Ncuti's first season is already in the can and his second already filming I'd be surprised if he doesn't get three seasons out of him, although beyond that who can say. It seems pretty clear that Ncuti's gonna be a star so even if he wants to keep doing it beyond three seasons it might not be possible.

Based on interviews Ncuti wants to go back into the theatre after Season 2, which could be why they went into it with such a short break.

And thinking about it that could be why Millie is auditioning for other roles as well, rather then because she's leaving.

Yeah, a break between series 2 and 3 with Ncuti returning for more after would be ideal.

Also, Millie walking isn't all that strange, ain't it? Piper did a couple of series only, and both Freema and Tate did only one series each.

Indeed. Doing only one series is pretty much the norm these days, with Coleman and the Whittaker team being the exceptions.

*Cough* Amy and Rory *cough*. I would disagree, I'd say two seasons is the norm for most characters

Rose 2 seasons
Martha 1 season
Donna 1+ seasons
Amy/Rory 2.5 seasons
Clara 2.5 seasons
Bill/Nardole 1 season
Yaz 3+ seasons
Ryan/Graham 2 seasons
Dan 1+ seasons
