He refused because the director of Day of the Doctor was apparently one of the directors he had major issues with during his series. He told Moffat he would come back if they changed director.

IIRC, Eccleston said he'd do "Day" if Joe Ahearne directed it. It's not that he had an issue with Moffat's director, it's that he wanted a director he knew and felt comfortable with.

Yeah, Eccleston didn't have an issue with Nick Hurran per se, he just wanted Joe Ahearne for the job, as Ahearne was the director from the first season he enjoyed working with the most. Moffat was already committed to having Hurran direct Day. Mind you, even if Moffat hadn't already decided on Hurran, it's doubtful he'd have gotten Ahearne anyway. Ahearne also never came back to Doctor Who after the first season, in this case that's his decision entirely as he felt the behind the scenes drama that went on during the first season stressed him out to the point of developing mental health issues it took a few years to overcome. He will not return to Doctor Who again, and he most especially wouldn't come back to the franchise to direct the high profile 50th anniversary special.

No, he refused because he wanted Moffat to get Joe Ahearne to direct.

Ahearne helmed the majority of the back end of searies one and must have been a heck of an improvement, getting Eccelston’s long lasting trust like that.

It's unlikely, because he lives in LA, but it would be one hell of a thing if they could get a Ringo cameo.

Ringo, at least in the 60s, was a Doctor Who fan. He actually had a video tape recorder and recorded the episodes so he could watch them later since he was typically busy with the band on Saturday evenings. Unfortunately, Ringo's collection of episodes burned up in a fire in the 1970s.

Only this time, the popularity wasn't about a multi-layered story involving survivors of a war-torn planet, where one faction had art deco shells with the still-expensive props used as joke fodder nowadays. Rewatch series one with "analysis mode" on: Eccleston is a bit better than your reaction of him, and he's one of the saving graces of the season and everyone loved his performance. The scripts? Not always as great, but almost everyone loved it and that's just as okay.

I doubt anyone would be a swap, but I do think you may be underestimating both Eccleston's standing as an actor AND his popularity. In the U.K. at least.

So had I, and I think he's a great actor. He and Billie had great chemistry, regardless of nitpicks anyone would have (rightly or otherwise). And RTD did approve their casting... there are many reasons I bought series 1 on home media... (Not many would buy something they actually hated, LOL.)

When I last rewatched Ecclestone's series, it was the first time in a long time that I had seen it. And I was shocked at how great he was in the role. I think it's just easy to forget because he only had one season. It kind of fades into the background.

It'd be interesting to see what story RTD comes up with for Mrs. Flood, although I'm inclined to think she was initially meant to be a cryptic one-off character by the way she casually broke the fourth wall and spoke directly to us viewers. Given all the fuss about her on teh interwebs, she's almost becoming Doctor Who's fan-driven "it" character like Captain Robau from Star Trek '09 or Boba Fett from Star Wars were, IMO.

Well to date the doctor has broken the 4th wall quite a few times over the shows history, Hartnell, Baker, McCoy, and Capaldi had a entire scene talking to us directly in the episode, wait for it...........before the Flood().............so breaking the forth wall is almost a Who tradition now, but if you want to strech that theory to breaking point, you could say only timelords have broken the forth wall over the course of the show, so what does that make Mrs Flood? (Dun dun daaaa). Lol

Which doesn't mean too much as changes are made before, during, and even after filming. Case in point, new footage was added at the beginning of "Church of Ruby Road" at the request of Disney after they screened the episode.
