Paramount and WBD in merger discussions

So, if Zaslav gets the reins, could Star Trek enter a new phase of on-screen hibernation like 2005-2009?

Not only that, but based on his modus operandi from other properties, another possible outcome is that things that have already been produced but not aired at the time of the hypothetical deal, could possibly just be never released in order to get a tax write-off.

And any titles that aren't making expected numbers on the streaming service could just be pulled, even if they were a original production, and there's nowhere else to see them.

I don't get it. Does Zaslov hate star trek??? Or just scripted tv shows in general......
Scripted TV in general, but the animation world in particular sees him the way Star Wars fans view JJ Abrams these days.

Speaking of which, if anyone hasn't bought Lower Decks and/or Prodigy on Blu-Ray yet, y'all better go do that right now and pray we get a physical release of season 4.

Well at least the first 5 series are played regular on TV. No worries there for people who don't want to buy them.

its sort of tragic. by all reports Zaslav is a big fan of classic Hollywood, and would like nothing better than to be an old fashioned movie mogul. But his fiduciary duty to sort out the dept is overriding that at the moment.

I've went through several hibernations, life does indeed go on. After five series in 7 years, Trek could probably stand to take a break from the small screen.

The problem, though, is that under his leadership they've done these drastic cost-cutting measures (which arguably points to the acquisition from AT&T and merger with Warner Bros. being an awful idea to begin with), but he also wastes money on stupid things.

Like what's the point of shelving movies to save money, when you then spend a small fortune rebranding HBO Max into "Max," which made absolutely no sense and seemed like an ego-driven decision where they didn't want to give the legacy Warner Bros./HBO executives the satisfaction of having Discovery content under that moniker. So, instead, they spent God knows what rebranding their streaming service to make it less recognizable and more confusing (e.g., the amount of people who either asked me what's Max? Or is HBO still part of Max? It all just points to how it was a waste).

And I just don't get how adding more debt into the situation makes their ability to make good choices better.

Warner Bros. Discovery is desperate, IMO. Zaslav is looking at anything that can save WBD money or turn a quick profit. Regardless if the merger/takeover happens or not, if it does, I can definitely see quickly Trek going the way of the CW's "Arrowverse" shows in which all existing shows come to a halt in a year or so. Zaslav may indeed look at Trek shows as being giant money pits and use the brand solely to license merchandise. I doubt there would be any new Trek productions--either on the small or big screen--under his watch.

Now, a reality tv show of which fan production gets to make a new series would be cheap for him with fans doing the FX work. And sushi.

I'd watch a reality show of the ongoing Axanar fan film drama. Endless lawsuits, repeatedly ignoring settlement agreements until you're smacked with a $300,000+ bill, immediately bragging online you're never going to pay it, involving a real-life cult in your fan film and putting their leader in a Starfleet uniform...
You'd never ever get anything like a series out of it. It'd cost hundreds of thousands in lawsuits. But it'd be the Tiger King of Star Trek.

Screw that, he doesn't deserve any more attention. Let him wallow in obscurity instead of giving him the fame he desires.

If that were true, he wouldn't have decimated Turner Classic Movies' workforce to a quarter of its previous size. From what I heard, he was close to axing the channel altogether until Spielberg, Scorsese, Fincher, etc put the fear of god into him. Then, Zaslav turned around and gave them much-touted guest programmer spots - essentially getting free labor and publicity, without having to pay an actual staff member. Zaslav also destroyed a large cache of movie promotional items that had been in storage on the Warner lot earlier this year as well. And demolition of the Warner ranch lot commenced earlier in 2023 - the Bewitched house is gone, the water fountain from Friends is gone.

None of these actions strike me as someone who gives two shits about the history of Hollywood.

The Ranch sale was announced in 2019, the agreement being that the buyers would build new facilities which WB would lease back. The fountain was moved to the main WB lot. LINK LINK

right, the sale and future lease agreement happened before the merger, it wasn't Zaslav's idea.
