Paramount and WBD in merger discussions

Everyone is in money saving mode. Best case scenario is that WBD lets the current shows complete their run.
Yes, and then cut way back.
Is that really so bad? It also means quality control is high.
Bad is subjective in this case. My view is simple: These are money saving measures with no bearing on quality. They will reduce the amount of shows produce to as few as possible, while maximizing profits for their owners.

It is very Roddenberry in some measures, but I doubt that fans are going to be happy with such measures.

I've never read the JLA-AVENGERS crossover yet. I wanted it badly when it was first cancelled and was resentful enough to develop a ''you had your chance'' attitude at the comic companies when it was finally completed. This is not to denigrate George Perez in any way whatsoever. But I'll assume that the published version had a ton of draws between characters so Marvel and DC wouldn't be classified as second best?

It was "too little, too late", and yeah, it was never going to have a flagship character flattened by one from the other company. It was more fan-wank than worthy crossover (the last time that happened was The New Teen Titans / Uncanny X-Men one-shot from 1982). The best time for a JLA/Avengers crossover would have been the early 70s, since the JLA's creative direction shaped into a mature team book with great arcs, which brought it up to the standards of the Avengers book of that time.

I loved it. This was a great cover

And the story wasn't really focused on "Versus" stuff. That was the DC vs Marvel series. It played very well with the classic DC Crisis tropes as well as a few Marvel ones.
Not that there weren't any fights

Given that Zaslav has made his bank by turning Discovery properties into a place where they put out (relatively) low cost reality shows, I don't think that's a given. Especially when the Warner Bros. Discovery leadership has been canceling critically acclaimed shows as well. It's arguably possible whatever Star Trek we could get in the future will be put out by people who care more about the bottom line than quality.

And if I'm being honest, I feel like that's what Paramount+ is trying to do with Starfleet Academy.

I have the sneaking suspicion why Star Trek: Legacy is not on the table even though positive fan feedback is the factors which will make it much more expensive. Legacy actors (e.g., Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, etc.) will probably want raises for a new long-term series commitment. Also, unless there were clauses that mitigated the payouts, also the creators of those characters are entitled to residuals.

Starfleet Academy will probably be filled with low-cost young actors, and they can do it on the cheap with CW-level visual effects and storylines (e.g., love triangles, low-stakes episode of the week dilemmas, etc.)

also the creators of those characters are entitled to residuals.
That only applies to characters introduced in episodes in written by writers who were not part of the show's writing staffs. Since both Seven and Raffi were introduced in episodes written by writers who were on the writing staffs of those shows, their creators aren't owed a thing each time they're used.

Supes needs a shield?

The Batman-Cap compromise reminds me of his truce with Namor during the '70s Avengers-Defenders War....perhaps the first ''epic'' Marvel crossover. Lots of draws in that one, too.....especially the Hulk-vs-Thor wrestling match in which even the narrator seemed to lose track of time. That fight was interrupted by everybody else. I was rooting for Thor then.

Mark Ruffalo's Hulk was hilarious in 2012, but the '70s Marvel Hulk bored me completely. He had more dialogue, but not much personality. Not only did I want Thor to trounce him, I wished the Thing could somehow do the same. Ben Grimm's solo comic arrived far too late in my view.

Some were dumb, some were fun. Batman and Iron Man should have been amalgamated, not Batman and Wolverine. Loved Challengers of the Fantastic and Spider-boy.

Absolutely agree.

I discovered them through the first X-Patrol comic. - which I adored at the time, being a big fan of ‘Roger Cruz’.

Allegedly these were just exploratory conversations, no actual deal was suggested.

That's kind of what started this whole thread, that there were some talks about a merger. Whether or not it actually happens remains to be seen, but just the mention of these talks couldn't help but ignite speculation of what may happen if it does come to pass, regardless if one is for it or against it.

Given that the stock prices of both WBD and Paramount fell after news of the merger talks broke, however, it's not that surprising that there'd be some clarification of the actual meeting between Zaslav and Paramount head Bakish.

I think we should at least give it till 2025 to know for sure if and/or when Legacy is coming. It took two full years for SNW to be officially announced, and that was a show which had a clear, built in premise there. I expect that takes time to go over.

As for SA, I'll save that for a different thread but suffice it to say that we could attract worse audiences than the teen girl Tumblr gif makers that they're clearly gunning for and as a former teen girl whose account is older than she was when she made it, I welcome them into the Trek fold.
I wonder how much Apple would pay for the ownership of Star Trek and the rights to all past series.
That's the best case scenario.

Since Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies isn't likely to get a revival (and their leading T-Bird actually quit mid-episode no less) I have nothing else of interest that I care who owes it or not from Paramount but Trek absolutely should not be in the control of a guy who cares even less for the franchise than even Les Moonves did twenty years ago. Even he cared enough to give ENT a fourth season for a syndication package.

I don't get it. Does Zaslov hate star trek??? Or just scripted tv shows in general......
