Contest: ENTER SF&F Avatar Contest: 2023 in Review

It's that time of year again...time to look back and reminisce about the science fiction & fantasy from the year that was!

Our topic is SF&F in 2023, and the criteria are simple: you can enter any of your favourite science fiction or fantasy movies, television/streaming shows, comics book or video games that you watch/read/played, as long as it was released sometime in 2023! OK, it doesn't really even have to be one of your favourites, it's fine if you simply enjoyed it, or even if you didn't really like it at all. No one is going to check!

Standard avatar contest rules apply: images must be no larger than 200 x 200 pixels and 1 MB, and must be SFW. Each entrant may enter up to three avatars. Please identify the movie, show, etc that your avatar depicts. Entries will be open for about a week.

Now I must apologize in advance... usually when I run a contest, I try to enter my avatars right at the end, so that others get first opportunity to enter things. However, as some of you may know, I don't often get to watch new things when they are still new, so I'm going to put my entries in now, because my options are limited. Sorry, but hopefully there are still a lot of other great choices out there!

Babylon 5: The Road Home

(And yes, I also did see the new Star Trek shows in 2023, but I wanted to leave them for others to enter! :) )

Have fun! :techman:

Godzilla Minus One

Quick question: considering its plot is set around a sentient AI, would Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Part One (that really is a mouthful) qualify as SF for the purpose of this contest?

An actual sentient AI? Sure, that sounds sufficiently SF to me. I’m glad that you mentioned the AI part beforehand, though!

Godzilla Minus One

Since I’m posting anyway, I might as well ask. I’m not really into Godzilla, and hadn’t even heard of this movie before seeing a few people refer to it here on this board. I’ve been curious as to what the “minus one” refers to in the title? Every time I see someone mention it, I can’t help but think of a “plus one” on a wedding invitation or something.

Just curious. :)

It is literally called "The Entity" in the movie.

No sweat. The title works on several levels. On a textual level, the movie is set right after World War II, when Japan lay in ruins and there was no Japanese military to speak of, so they're already at the bottom, when Godzilla appears and wreaks havoc, so they go from Zero to Minus One. Another interpretation is more meta, as the movie is the first Godzilla movie to be entirely set before the original film from 1954 (and only one before was partially set during World War II, through time travel). Finally, the logo of the movie is actually G -1, so a play on T -1, also playing with the setting before the original movie.

Star Trek SNW "Those Old Scientists"

Love the av, but unfortunately it's like 4 times the allowable size limit. Could you please modify so it fits within the 1 MB restriction?

No. 3. Asteroid City

So I checked the previous one, because it seemed extra long. But then I had to check everyone's, just to be fair, and it turns out this entry is twice the allowable size. Could you please modify this one too?

I'll try.
