Who's your Captain?

Sisko all the way. He's not overly quick to surrender, and he fights efficiently enough without leg-kicking......or foolishly exposing his back to stab-happy Andorians. I remember when he was fighting to save Dax from a John Glover character* in a DS9 episode. Granted, he may not have made the captaincy at the time, but he fought vastly better than Worf's usual run-then-get-flipped bridge routine.

(*If memory serves.)

Plus, Sisko was the safest to serve under. Look at how many crew were killed (known for certain by either dialogue or seeing it happen), and he lost fewer people than Kirk, Picard, and Janeway. And he was the only one who was in the middle of a war.

(Archer is very close in numbers, due to the Xindi arc of season 3. I'd have to run the numbers again, but he's the only one who can even compete with Sisko for safest to serve under.)

This is great! What excellent responses. Everyone valid as the day is long. I'd like to also say I really enjoy Enterprise. Archer and the crew are amazing. I would offer to have T'Pol's children but there's that whole Human-Vulcan compatibility thingy

Archer was in a war. Of course his losses were terrible . Lorca was in the middle of a war ( Prime version did lose a ship but as it’s not the same captain doesn’t really count) and had few war related casualties,as well. Saru was an acting captain during the latter stage of that war, also. Whether they send a formal declaration of war to the federation, Picard and Janeway were both involved up to their eyeballs in the Borg conflicts. I don’t know if it was mentioned if Picard was a captain during the Tzenkethi or Cardassian wars

I think it would depend upon the circumstances I find myself in.

If I need morals held up high in a region of space that's safe enough to allow to be concerned about such things, probably Picard. If I face an enemy powerful enough that our side really could do with some divine support, probably Sisko. If we need to outsmart said (semi-)divine party or other powerful antagonist in an unsafe region of space by relying on wit and/or ability to seriously kick ass if need be, probably Kirk or Janeway. If we need a gazelle speech delivered, probably Archer.

All in all, and despite his tendency to pontificate somewhat, I think I'd still go for Picard, after all these years.

The Xindi mission can be construed as a war, I agree. But the Dominion War was 2 full years. And Sisko was commanding DS9 for 7 years. Archer didn't lose his anyone until season 3, which is impressive on its own. (By the way, Sisko also didn't lose anyone until season 3.)

Lorca... as you said, doesn't count because it was the mirror version we saw. Though they were in a war, they were in it only for a very short time. I'm also not counting Saru in this because my focus was more TOS-ENT.

Janeway was not a captain until Voyager. (At least, it was never mentioned she was.) And Picard was captain during the Cardassian War, but we don't know his casualty rate during his command of the Stargazer. (In "The Wounded", he said he was sent to make peaceful overtures to the Cardassians... this was dialogue in the beginning of the episode.)

And while they basically were in a state of war with the Borg, those two Borg incursions were 7 years apart. The Dominion War had battles constantly in those two years. So I don't count the Borg incidents.

Besides, I was really comparing Sisko to Kirk, Picard, and Janeway... they were the only ones I mentioned specifically. And I did concede that I was not 100% certain Archer had fewer than Sisko, but said it was at least a close competition. And my comparison was more along the lines of Kirk, Picard, and Janeway losing more people while not at war than Sisko, who was in the middle of a 2 year war, and how incredible it was that Sisko was still the safer captain to serve under.
