I solved my problem with the cat pooping directly on the litter box lid. I opened the front of the box to make it front-entry, but now I've created a new problem with how much litter he kicks out.

Get a big Rubbermaid type box and put the litter box in the bigger box. Then cut a u-shaped hole in the larger plastic box, about 2 or 3 inches from the bottom. Kitty won't be able to kick litter out (as easily).
