Mandatory Starfleet service

For some reason, I'm wondering now how a conversation between McCoy and Troi would have gone, had they lived in the same era and Troi had invited McCoy to talk about 'some reports about his negative attitudes and his complaining which is not good for crew morale' :D

McCoy wouldn't appreciate Troi using her empathic abilities on him to gauge his emotions.

The conversation might go downhill from that point.

We work to better ourselves and the rest of humanity.

What better way than through service?
Do you have to make your own Kool-Aid? Or does Starfleet provide it?
Mccoy never complained about anything at any time though
Might help if you include this.

McCoy and Troi probably HAVE met (during his inspection tour of the Enterprise-D in "Farpoint"), although of course there'd be no reason for her to 'analyze' him.

If she had, though, I agree he wouldn't appreciate it too much. He'd probably say what we are all thinking, what's the point of having someone around to point out emotions when it's so damn obvious?

And I'd friggin' LOVE to see McCoy meet Lwaxana. :guffaw:

Was McCoy really that negative? He complained about things, sure, but that always seemed to me like an affectation to rib his friends.

He's not artificially happy, but he's not always grumpy either. Just my opinion.

I think it depends on the situation and the writer. Though in the whales movie, he was downright intulting. Especially with the state of "modern medicine."

No, I agree, as I said, he loved to complain. It came from a good heart.

Still, I would like to see how the 24th century psychologist would have reacted to that.

To McCoy, 20th century probably IS the Dark Ages by comparison. There's an almost 300 year difference between that era and what McCoy worked in daily. We've made advancements that eclipse things from 50 years ago... imagine 3 centuries.

In rewatching TOS, he ribs Kirk but is sometimes serious with him; he likes to be Jim's Jiminy Cricket. It's Spock that gets him riled up! And, of course, expecting him to be a ______ instead of a doctor. ;)

McCoy is the superego to Spock's ego and Kirk's id.

OK, OK, OK...
Didn't mean to hijack the thread. Just responding to McCoy being ill-tempered at times. Gotta be stressful being the main doctor on a ship with thousands of multi-species beings.

So, to the Mandatory Starfleet service... I don't think it's compulsory. Probably just implied. Likely why Sisko's father was so resistent to... I don't know what. He just seemed dedicated to being non-Starfleet, while still trying to support his son.
