What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

You can question the daylights out of "why". But it's tough to question the basic fact that it is somehow inspirational to real people.

That is the question: Why?

Why does this get placed at a higher level of value in popular culture? That's my curiosity because to me, the things that people cite as inspiration are a source of endless fascination, even if some don't always register perfectly with me. That it's popular makes it more of a curiosity to me.

What if the Federation had backed the Klingon invasion of Cardassia?

Hardliners within the Federation Council are able to win the argument, arguing the Federation's alliance with the Klingons is too important in a time with multiple crisis points and they're able to hold the Council to standing by their Klingon allies providing support and help.

The Klingons effectively conquer the Cardassian Union and put it under occupation. The Maquis become an after-thought and disbands with Cardassian resistance eliminated. On the one hand, it would effectively eliminate Cardassian territory as a future beachhead for the Dominion. On the other hand, the Martok Changeling would still be out there as the head of Klingon forces.

In this scenario, would it have undermined the Changeling's plans and caused them to totally rethink their strategy, or would they have used the Martok Changeling to either cause new conflicts (e.g., have him push to invade Romulan territory next)?

I could imagine section 31 getting considerable influence if the Federation backed this. Then maybe Bajor would back away from the Federation.

However the Federation + Klingons would be difficult for the Dominion

I think the Cardassians turn to the Dominion a LOT sooner. And with the Federation at war with the Cardassians from the beginning of DS9 S4, the Cardassians and Dominion retake control of DS9 immediately instead of waiting.

In early DS9 Season 4, Rom is still one of Quark's employees, which means he doesn't help to create the minefield, which means that the Dominion can travel through the Wormhole without anything blocking it.

Basically, if the Federation backs the Klingons, they'll get wiped out after Cardassia joins the Dominion in early-2372 (instead of mid-2373).

However much it aspires not to be (and succeeds in not being), there is a level at which the Federation has always been, and remains, the culturally Human Empire — even during the period when Earth was not a member. It’s not an oppressive or exclusive one, and in practice it’s just as multispecies as it says it is… but when Klingons called out the Enterprise as a human ship and the Federation for “human” rights, they weren’t just blowing smoke.

Some of them might blame paranoia for the Dominion to be cause for the Klingons and the Federation wanting to go to war with them, but Dukat's Dukat. He's only interested in power and being in a position that most benefits him. A lot of other Cardassians probably would've felt the same.

If the Federation and Klngons are already both at war with the Cardassians, they'd be in even worse shape than they were around the time leading up to "In Purgatory's Shadow". Dukat wants to "Make Cardassia Strong Again". He's all about that, regardless of what might or might not have happened before. So, if he strikes a deal with the Dominion, everyone else will fall in line (no matter what they might or might not think) just like what actually ended up happening. Because they want to have the upper-hand as well. The truth doesn't matter. Especially not to Cardassians. To quote Rudy Guliani, "Truth isn't truth!"

"Fair Haven" came out after I stopped watching VOY during first-run. Nevertheless, I knew about the episode's reputation. When I finally got around to watching "Fair Haven" in 2008, when I (re-)watched the entire series from start-to-finish, my thoughts could be best summed up as, "Wait a minute. Was I supposed to hate this?"
