Paramount working on DS9 HD?

Always amazes me how much misinformation gets spread about TNG, DS9 and/or VOY in relation to how they were filmed/edited/mastered, whether it be here, Twitter/X or elsewhere. Ranging from “they were shot on tape” to “DS9 and VOY were all 100% CGI effects.” The above comments about TNG being edited on film is a new one on me though.

Paramount would have been able to save millions if that were the case when they did the TNG Blurays: just rescan the finished edits and call it a day.

For me, VOY and DS9 represent 14 Seasons of frustration. I love the shows. I'd like to enjoy them, but my enjoyment is forever held back by a feeling of... 'I wish they'd do something with this fucking picture...'.

I'm really surprised that the picture is that bad. Like to the point of wondering if there's something wrong with the upscaling on your setup. If not, I'd probably look into getting a 30 or 40" set from the early 2000s just to watch DS9 and other DVDs on. Probably pick one up for cheap at a garage sale or Goodwill.

Come on, man.

I explained my position.

It’s not the settings on my TV.

It’s my opinion.

While I disagree with the opinion anyone telling people how to watch media just because of settings doesn't respect personal viewpoints.

Please note that I didn't tell Richard what to do, I said what I'd probably do. What he does is up to him, of course.

Genuine question to those who think the picture doesn't matter or that DS9/VOY in their present states look 'fine'.

Take this scenario:

You have in front of you one nice HDTV and a highly optimal player. Also in front of you are two unlabelled discs, each containing your favourite episode of DS9/VOY.

One disc is HD, one is SD. You have no way of knowing which is which, because they aren't labelled. So you choose a disc and load it up, only to find you've chosen the SD version...

Do you -

A) Settle down to watch, it looks fine to you, you don't care so much about the picture, so let's get into the episode.

Or -

B) Put yourself through the minor inconvenience of getting up and changing the disc so you could watch it in HD in order to enjoy it in higher quality.

Genuine question. Not looking to start a fight.

I find it really amusing that audiophiles will go and get old equipment like a 1979 Thorens turntable and a NAD 3020 amp so they can listen to an old LP “like it was meant to be”, but for TV nobody is interested in watching an old show on a 14” portable Ranger set in mono sound.

Realistically, just like TOSR, DS9R will split fans. There will be the “just take my money”s, the “that’s not the correct ship”s, the “sod off am I paying that”s and there will be the “well that looks nice, but I think it was better before”s. And we’ll all be each others throats.
It will be like he old times.
It will be glorious.

DS9 predominantly used physical models into the start of the sixth season. Yes, there were CGI effects from the start with the wormhole and Odo’s morphs, but the show was primarily made exactly the same way as the later seasons of TNG.

I'll be three out of the four all at once.

IIRC, A Call to Arms was almost exclusively physical models, as were the first 4 episodes of S6.

We're looking at five large scale CGI set pieces:

- Sacrifice of Angels
- Valiant
- Tears of the Prophets
- The Changing Face of Evil
- What You Leave Behind

S3's The Die is Cast were models. Way of the Warrior was chiefly model work, as was the mirror episode Shattered Mirror. The one fully CGI episode I recall from earlier in the show was S4's Starship Down.

DS9 never went full CG; S7's Once More unto the Breach (Kor's last hurrah) was obviously model work. Voyager, on the other hand, went full CGI late S3.

One pet peeve: I wasn't the biggest fan of the fiery explosion FX they reused with the models. CGI could do wonders to enhance the boom boom.

But do you want it to?

Damn it, Lucas. Look what you've done to us.

Yes.

I was always "jealous" Voyager had dibs on the top FX house,

Scorpion and A Call to Arms came out round the same time. Both shows always used that same fiery effect anytime an explosion was required. They had a few variations overlaid, but it always looked similar. Once they turned to CGI, they could generation explosions that looked more to scale, with more variety and detail - including debris.

Prettier boom, IMO.

And yes, I'm getting damn deep here.

@fireproof78

Fair enough. However, that does mean we are basically never going to agree on this.

I also don’t know why you feel it necessary to engage in a discussion about HD Remastering if you don’t care about picture quality. You don’t have a horse in this race.

It’s probably best that we leave it right here though.

That must save you a lot of money.
Seeing as how I use a DVD/VHS combo player and a basic TV yes it does.

Curiosity on my part.

Also, supporting the idea that you do know the settings on your media player to give you the desired performance and how DS9 does not currently measure up.

Finally, curiosity over if this DS9 HD project will be financially viable.
