Star Trek Leaving Crave?

Here's the article

https://trekmovie.com/2023/07/03/st...ada-will-continue-broadcasting-on-ctv-sci-fi/

Bell Media also confirmed CTV Sci-Fi subscribers will continue to have access to all episodes of Strange New Worlds, Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and Prodigy via CTV.ca and the CTV app.

The above is no longer true ( at least for me). All episodes were to stay via CTV app ( for cable subscribers), not just new episodes with window

That's what it says, yup. Thanks for linking. To me that looks like miscommunication. The quote from Bell in the article says broadcast home and that broadcast content will be on CTV app/ctv.ca

However, CTV Sci-Fi continues to be the exclusive Canadian broadcast home of Star Trek, and this content will continue to live on CTV.ca and the CTV app.

Well Prodigy has been "off the air" for quite a while . And same for early seasons of Picard. At yet all those episodes were available up untill recently on the CTV app.. Well beyond the temporary streaming window after new episodes broadcast. That's what got me confused. ( along with the apparent oversight from Trekmovie)

The streaming landscape in Canada is a complicated one, it's no wonder there was some confusion. Nothing ever seems straightforward over here with everything being split between multiple streaming services and content providers.

Yup. Your not kidding. And guess what...Picard, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy , are now BACK on the CTV app. ???

Make up your mind people, I guess I didn't need to subscribe to Paramount plus Canada. ( i can live with the ads, and they seem to be add free when acessed from my PVRs on demand feature)

I wonder if Bell media and Paramount recently made some sort of licensing agreement. I just watched the pilot of Picard on the CTV app and I saw multiple promos for Paramount plus Canada. Something I don't remember seeing before on the app. Perhaps this agreement to promote paramont plus enables Bell to keep their add supported coverage for trek for their cable subscribers?

Then again who knows. And who knows how long the episodes will be up.

This is SOP for how CTV acts and has been for years. It's just y'all likely never paid attention to it before since you had no reason to believe the Star Trek shows were going to be pulled at a moment's notice like you do now. I simply have learned not to worry about it. I keep watching the Trek shows on CTV Sci-Fi at the moment mostly because it is the most financially convenient for me. But should that no longer be possible, getting a Paramount+ subscription is super easy, barely an inconvenience.

The status quo likely hasn't changed. I remember reading that it'd continue to be made available via the CTV app. But being that Crave is also owned by Bell, it adds to the confusion as to why if it's available via the CTV app (to the general public trying to find it anyway), then why couldn't it also be made available on Crave where it's more widely available? It ends up creating inconsistent messaging over its availability, particularly at a time when we've been told all Trek would be moving to P+.

A likely scenario is that Paramount likely knew they couldn't completely sever the relationship with Bell given its longstanding agreement that was previously in place. And it could be that, should Paramount decide it wants to keep producing at its Canadian studios, which I believe Bell had a stake in funding, then cutting all ties wouldn't have been something they could do.

No mention of CTV Sci-fi just CTV.ca and CTV app. I don't mind ads for the occasional re-watch but I prefer to watch commercial free for the first viewing. Hopefully it will also air on Cable so I can skip the commercials.

I wonder why it won't stream on Crave. It's not like it will be an option on Paramount plus Canada.

If it's only available via CTV app ( via cable subscription), does that mean Canadians who cut the cord will be out of luck? Or will it stream in the "no login required" version of the app?

I watch on CTV Sci-fi too when I can. Especially for new episodes that stream weekly. The issue with me is for re-watches. I'm not waiting weeks/months to record multiple episodes from previous seasons if I want to binge rewatch a show.

I've been slowly purchasing Trek on itunes over the years. Have all the movies that way and SNW s1 ( will get S2). So eventually that's what I may do for streaming binge rewatching in the future.

It's going to be really weird if it isn't on CTV Sci-Fi. To my knowledge, I know of no current show which is available on CTV.ca or the CTV app which does not air on any of the various CTV channels.

Oh, really?!

That's great news! I'm glad season 2 has found a home! (And also glad that it's not Netflix here in Canada. I was personally hoping for Amazon Prime, though.)

I don't know, but as someone in that exact situation, I will be watching this closely. If they do end up putting it on Crave, I have no issues with resubscribing to Crave for a month or two to watch the season. But I am not signing up for overpriced cable again just for this. In looking at the login screen on the CTV app, it looks like they now accept a bunch of those ISP-based online television services. IIRC, the basic starter package for my ISP's TV service is pretty cheap, so I could theoretically sign up for that if needed, as long as it doesn't carry a long-term commitment.

Ultimately, though, I hope it comes out on blu-ray, so I can get my own copy to watch whenever. That's why the news of Netflix being the main player here makes me a little nervous: they are not necessarily home-media friendly. Hopefully whatever contract Paramount signed with them allows for Paramount to still release the show to disc.

Which only goes to prove just how confusing and frustrating a situation it is for Canadians. And Bell hasn't exactly made things any clearer either in their official messaging. I imagine that the scenario could be that Bell had to negotiate a new deal which gave Paramount+ streaming rights, leaving the broadcast rights to Bell/CTV with the condition that any streaming there be tied to cable subscribers, hence why it likely wouldn't be available on Crave given that Crave is available nationally with or without cable. But again, they haven't been very forthright about it. And the Trek move to P+ has been hilariously ill-timed given Prodigy's cancellation and move elsewhere throwing only more uncertainty into the air.

I wasn't even aware that Netflix picked up Prodigy, but as most of the time, it excludes Canadians, so go figure. All of this reminds me of when I find a show of interest after watching it be featured on a talk show/morning show, etc, only to try to figure out where it's airing in Canada as most of the time these 'homes' if you will, aren't often available to Canadian audiences. JustWatch is only useful part of the time as it's not always updated with the latest information.

I like to think we're all fairly knowledgeable here, so I can only imagine the less up-to-date getting frustrated in trying to get their Star Trek fix. Canada: Where not even the where can be answered properly. The who and the what we know, but the where?! Fuggedaboutit!

So how can Canadians stream Short Treks? Wanted to show Q and A to my partner as I got her into Strange New Worlds (shes a big fan). It was on Crave until they lost the rights to Paramount minus........but

....... Paramount minus ( i.e the Canadian version) does NOT have short Treks. Nor is it available for purchase on itunes. Very frustrating. The Ready Room is also not avaliable to Paramount minus ( yes yes I know it's on star trek.com/ certain social media). Also audio description MIA on various modern Trek shows.
Whereas as the u.s versiin of Paramount plus( and Crave) has/had all of the above .

Wouldn't be surprised if short Treks is scattered on some of the blurays for Discovery/Picard, by I'm not purchasing a bunch of discs just for short treks

Note that that disc doesn't include "Children of Mars" (it is a special feature on Picard season 1), but if you're just looking for the SNW-era ones, then you're golden.

I really do miss Crave so much. I haven't necessarily used every streaming service out there, but of the ones I have used, Paramount+ is the worst. :(

Discovery for whatever reason didn't appear on Crave until around 24 hours after it aired on CTV Sci-fi the previous day. Hopefully with the P+ switch over, it will be on P+ the same day and I won't have to try and avoid spoilers all day anymore.

Also holy shit, DSC/PIC/LDS on Paramount+ (on my Roku at least) are so much higher quality than they were on Crave. On Crave they always seemed to be so blurry, like they were not at full HD.

TOS-R and TNG-R seemed fine, it was just the new shows.

I actually can't afford another service so I have been getting my LD 'elsewhere' but I want to support my fave shows.

That's interesting, I never noticed any blurriness on PIC or SNW on Crave. (Those were the only shows I managed to watch on Crave, IIRC, after getting rid of cable but before the P+ move.) But I wasn't going through a Roku, so maybe that's the difference.

Crave wasn't the best streaming interface out there, but it still kinda shocks me that it was so much better than P+. Paramount/CBS has been at this for years; you'd think they'd put some effort into improving their awful app.
