How bad is season 3?

I always hear that the third season is not that good, that there are some terrible episodes in that season and that the writing got much worse.

What I want to know is, exactly how much worse did the show get? I mean, how many BAD episodes was there, how many OK episodes was there, and how many GOOD/GREAT was there?

And if you could rate the season as a whole, from 1-10, what would it get (and what would seasons 1-2 get compared to it)?

Compared to TOS-1 and 2 its a noticeable drop down, but still good

Thanks to Modern Trek they look great in comparison

I agree - it's main problem is the contrast - the bad episodes are generally much worse compared to the bad episodes in S1 and S2. The best episodes are good enough to stand with the best of S1 and S2, though, IMO.

The feel of the show is different though it is hard to explain exactly how.

I wouldn't go that far, though

I would, i still find it far superior to most of Modern Trek, especially in the craft of entertanment/story telling

I personally think the drop in quality started in the second half of season 2 when Gene Coon left the show. And that's coming from someone who liked most of season 3.

I would say that season 3 is fair at best. The writing quality really took a hit, but there are some pretty entertaining episodes bunched in there. They aren't fantastic by any means, but I still found most of them enjoyable. However, there were a few times when I just stared at my T.V. and said "What the hell were they thinking?"

I think all of these rate with the best of the series:

The Enterprise Incident
Spock's Brain
Elaan of Troyius
Whom Gods Destroy
The Way to Eden
Savage Curtain
Turnabout Intruder

But I've never cared for The Tholian Web. To each their own.

I'm first and last a TOS fan. As a Trekkie I still find something to enjoy in the other series, more so TNG and ENT than the others. Season 3 has a number of good episodes, and it's always interesting to see the different tastes people have with regards to the poorer episodes. Some hate "Spock's Brain", I find it so bad its good!! I enjoy "The Way to Eden", "Turnabout Intruder", and imho I think "Spectre of the Gun" is one of the seasons better offerings.

Regards

I know it's popular cant around this forum to say we'd take TOS's worst over modern Trek's best and, believe me, I'm very much a TOS supremacist but really, now: would you rather watch "And the Children Shall lead" or "The Lights of Zetar" over "Best of Both Worlds," "In the Pale Moonlight" or even "In a Mirror Darkly"? Not me, baby.

TOS, at its best, remains far and away the best of the Treks. But I think it cheapens the towering successes of the best episodes when we pretend its shit don't stink. Lean a little bit closer and see the roses really smell like... sorry, became Andre 3000 for a second there.

S1 - 10/10
S2 - 9/10
S3 - 7/10

Where Season 3 disappoints is the half dozen or so episodes that are full of padded out page after padded out page of dull speeches to fill time.

Some patches of very tedious trekking, but give me TOS Season 3 over any season of 87-05 Trek any day.

I think aussie's grading is spot on. There are some real bad ones in S3, like "And the Children Shall Lead," "Spock's Brain," which can also be good, campy fun, and the horrendous "Plato's Stepchildren," although it has the dubious distinction of showing the first interracial kiss on TV, between Kirk and Uhura. -- RR

Oh, I'd take "In the Pale Moonlight" or "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" over the "Cloud Minders" or "Way to Eden" any day.

There were definitely good S3 eps. I love "The Tholian Web" and unlike most here, I like "Turnabout Intruder". There are also gems like "Day of the Dove", etc.

But no doubt, there are more "klunks" this season than in the first two.

Still, it's Star Trek. I'd still watch "Way to Eden" over most of the trash on TV nowadays. Except perhaps "Jericho" and they had to go and cancel that. :/

Well, there you are Warped9, hoist by your own mis-quote! Enjoy your new role as the defender of Modern Trek!! :)

Good points, which is why I originally said I wouldn't go that far - even if I wasn't thinking of exactly those episodes.

I like Cloud Minders even though it makes absolutely no sense, but The Way to Eden? I'd watch some Voyager episodes before I'd watch it, and that's saying a whole bunch.

Don;t get me wrong, there are some 'lows' - The lowest clearly is And the Children - what I'm saying is the overall production was more craft than MT's by the numbers approach and the main actors in TOS are just better performers than most MT - Stewart and Spiner excluded

And yes I'd rather see Lights of Zetar than BOBW:borg: part 2 that is - Part 1 that's a different story

I'd say that TNG S1 and to a lesser extent S3 with a few S2 episodes also thrown in, captures the style and film making of TOS (ie what made TOS entertaining). By S4 B&B:devil: influence wounded ST and it got worse until S3 ENT saw a slight turn around

What makes no sense about Cloud Minders? A society of elitist convinced they are superior and taking advantage of the planet dwellers (or in their minds doing them a favor). I call that 21st century Global outsourcing (ie paying someone $1 a day to make hundreds of Nike's that sell in America at $75-$150 a pop? Not trying to get political but clearly makes sense.

Even 1960's trek is more relevant today then Voyager
