A common complaint I hear from toy collectors is that they don't want to get started buying a new set of figures (e.g. the first/only wave from Playmates) if they don't know that they'll be able to finish the set. .
That was the issue in the early 2000s with Art Asylum / DST's 7-inch TOS figures; it started off as a very promising line, with solos of the main characters (including villains such as Kor, Kang, the Gorn and Khan), two-packs (e.g., WNMHGB Kirk and Spock), exclusives (e.g., Kirk and Pike in captain's chairs, Kirk with the Phaser rifle)--the works, but it was cancelled just as it was taking deeper dives into variants or new characters, seen with prototypes of McCoy in his medical smock & Chapel, respectively. The sudden cancellation of the line left fans feeling blindsided--that the line was--in the end was another half-effort like many film/TV toy lines.
