How much Star Trek do you really want/need?

Here’s an interesting question. At least I thought it was quite interesting.

How much Star Trek is ENOUGH for you?

We’re in an age of almost overwhelming content, although it’s probably safe to say we’ve passed the peak streaming boom. I sometimes struggle to even remember how many Trek shows are being produced at any given time. To be fair, I like all of them to varying degrees, although Lower Decks has never been my particular cup of tea. I’ve found plenty to enjoy in Discovery, Picard, SNW and Prodigy. The short Treks were quite cool (although Very Short Treks are IMO perilously closer to simply being “content” and little more).

The thing is, though, while I’ve largely enjoyed the new shows, I don’t find I have any real desire to rewatch any of them. Whereas I continually rewatch TOS, early TNG and DS9. If those were the only Trek shows that existed, I’d be perfectly happy.

Again, I’m not one of those Prophet-awful Trek gatekeepers, because I genuinely like most the new shows, but…..I don’t feel like I need them. They’re more a pleasant bonus. For me, TOS, TNG and DS9 are more than sufficient. if nothing else existed id be content with that, and those are the shows I take great comfort in rewatching again and again.

so, how much Trek is ENOUGH for you? Are you invested in all of it, or do you care more about certain eras than others? Are you keen to have unlimited content, or do you reach a point where the sheer volume starts to rob it of some of its specialness?

So long as something is being made, I am generally happy.

I would like to feel that the universe is growing and that new people are coming to it.

Unfortunately, it is mostly failing on that second part. I could complain about this or that series, but being sequestered by a niche streaming service has been a disaster in my opinion. At least one series needs to be on regular in first run. That's why I keep saying, "Free Star Trek!" Release it from streaming and put a first run show on CBS. Make it free to watch (or at least part of it).

Unless Legacy happens, after Discovery I'm done. Of the new shows, I'm only really a fan of DSC and PIC.

I liked Prodigy more than I thought I would, and I think what Paramount+ did was horrible, but I don't feel a burning urge to see it continue. I'd like to see the second season out of curiosity, if I'm able to, but if I don't I'll live.

SNW is the first live-action series of the Kurtzman Era that didn't grab me. For what it is, it's fine, but it's the opposite of everything I want. There's no way to say it other than to say it. The episodes only interest me when they swing for the fences, and that right there is a huge red flag.

I'm sure Starfleet Academy will also be fine for what it is, and I appreciate that they'll be continuing the 32nd Century, but the Academy is school. In and of itself, I'm not that interested in watching a series about school.

I'm not a fan of Lower Decks. I haven't watched it in a long time. Maybe at some point I'll go back to it, but I'll have to be in the mood.

I'm glad the Section 31 TV Movie was green-lit. But we're so far removed from DSC Season 2 at this point that, for me, and it's more like having a jab at people I've argued with for years one last time. Got one more in there!

Star Trek on the Big Screen. The TOS Movies will always be my Star Trek Movies. Picard, especially Season 3, went a long way to salvage the TNG Movies. And Season 3 gave a huge middle finger to Generations and Nemesis. Always a plus in my book. So now I feel like I'm done with the movies. The Abrams Films have no staying power with me, and I can't say I'm enthused about any films coming next.

So, yeah. My interest in this Star Trek era is winding down. We'll see what happens with the next era, however many years from now that is.

I don't Need Trek, but it is nice to have. I will watch whatever comes. I think I can be a bit more choosy with what I like, but I still have that completist mentality. However, the Section 31 and Academy Series are two that I don't need so maybe I might skip them. I do like Michelle Yeoh though and if they have a Michelle Yeoh/William Sadler meet/team up, that might be interesting, but I think I'm done with the Section 31 concept.

I've enjoyed the new stuff, and it's must-see TV as it drops, but like others have said, I don't currently have the desire to rewatch any of it or to buy it in physical media. If there are new shows, I will probably watch them, but I'm not championing any of the ones being discussed. I am also rather salty about how Prodigy was treated.

That said, TNG, DS9, and VOY will have to be pried from my cold, dead hands. I rewatch them regularly and still enjoy them. My kids already have instructions to make sure I can watch them as I wish in the nursing home.

Bad Trek: Too much already.
Meh Trek: We don't need any more.
Good Trek: A little more won't hurt.
Amazing Trek: More! More! More!

Problem is, to make amazing Trek, we have to deal with some lesser efforts.

I think I've had enough.

I was surprised to like the Kelvinverse films and would have been happy if there had more at the time. There wasn't and it feels "too late" to go back to it. Even if there were further films I just can't imagine going to the pictures to see them. The cinema has become an unpleasant experience - the adverts have become so loud that they hurt.

NuTrek has failed to grab me. I recognise that there are a lot of current fashions in filming that I don't like (mystery boxes - boring padding that rarely pays off; the overuse of bizarre camera angles; characters with far too much baggage; over-explanation and over-complication) and that doesn't help but I feel that, rather than make "good" Trek, "they" have just made a "lot" of Trek. All that produces is franchise fatigue. I've found some of the new ST okay but not enough to be bothered about seeing or not seeing it. The knock-on from that is that I don't really care whether they make any more Trek.

The way Trek has been made difficult to watch by spreading it around multiple platforms and now by concentrating on a single platform that you are pretty much only going to have if you are already a fan is daft. I don't feel any need to get a streaming service "in case" I might like something they have.

I like TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9. I have those and all the films on DVD. I'm happy.

I feel like I have all the Trek I need but it's okay if there's new stuff coming out, no one is forcing anyone to watch it.
If you don't know it by now, I worship TNG. Well, the episodes I think are great, not all of it.
Also, TOS has my respect for what it is and what it led to and it's good.
To this day I haven't watched everything Trek has to offer.
I've watched TOS, TNG, DS9, VGR and ENT.... but
TAS, maybe one episode, if that.
DSC, watched the first season, perhaps something from season 2.
0 episodes of Short Treks.
0 episodes of PIC, I have watched clips of it and I'm 99,8% sure I wouldn't like it.
0 episodes of Lower Decks.
0 episodes os Prodigy.
0 episodes of Strange New Worlds.
On the movie side I've watched the originals, TNG movies and pieces of the new one with Spock in it.

Some 0 episode series might get a view at some point, I don't know.
Looks like I'm more into the older material but I guess I won't find out if I don't watch few episodes of the fresh material.

I've at least tried all the series. I should probably watch a few more TAS's. May give DIS another if I can ever watch it on a big screen.

I haven't seen all the series but the 2nd season of SNW has set low expectations for me. It feels like the show (and franchise) are playing it rather safe with callbacks to and appearances of already established and beloved characters, but not really giving them the depth I wish they had. I hope that going forward we'll get more new settings and characters instead of needing to explain how everything in Spock's life went down :P

I don't think we need any more Trek. I'm happy to enjoy a new season of SNW if / when it comes.

Honestly, if they announced they were shutting it all down, I'd be more interested in the drama here than anything else. On a personal level, I'd be more reflective than upset.

I say turn it all off for now and just sit back and relax and chill sippin’ on some cognac whilst it all reboots. Maybe put a Star Wars film or two on in the interim until the curtain call?

To be honest, I stopped watching Star Trek for a while after TNG ended. DS9 and Voyager didn't really grab me at first, and so I did not watch them regularly. I did eventually come back to DS9 (through re-runs) once I heard about the Dominion War story arc, and it has become one of my favorite shows. I also came to like Voyager through re-runs, and I was able to tune in for Season 7 as it aired. Same deal with Enterprise and its first season (skipped after the first couple of episodes, and then came back after some re-runs). I have been more regular watching NuTrek, partly because I'm paying for Paramount+, but also because they've become a nice distraction in my life, especially during hard times. But there is an ephemeral quality to them, like they'll be here today and gone tomorrow, like we've already seen with Prodigy. I'll watch as long as there is something to watch, but I might not always be in a rush to see it.
