The Most Disliked Episode of TOS, 2023 Edition - Season 1...

I will save "The Conscience of the King" because of the Shakespearian theme. On a personal note, it also reminds me of a cousin I love dearly, who is a retired English teacher and who shares a surname with the episode's Captain Jon Daily of the Astral Queen.

"What Are Little Girls Made Of?" is another that is much beloved by me. I love all it's strange queer imagery. All those stone penises. The two naked spinning Kirk's. And it features the birth of Christine Chapel, who has now unexpectedly become one of my favorite Trek characters.

Damn, I need to put this one on right now.

Unnamed Caitian clarified later that they read the title wrong; "Space Seed" is still in the running for "Most Disliked" cuz they personally don't like the ending.

Looks like I got the times mixed up on the posts. My apologies.

My next save is "THE NAKED TIME".

Nimoy was just outstanding here. And Kirk showed us just how focused he can be when the Enterprise is at stake. And learning yet another hobby of Sulu adds to the character building of the crew.

No worries!

I'm going to save "Dagger of the Mind". I recently fell down a little rabbit hole researching the various allusions to Jewish culture and mythology in that episode, the script is very writerly (even after Roddenberry's edits) in a way I am fond of.

Menagerie Part 2 is my next save. Even though it wasn't quite as mysterious as Part 1, it gave us a nice denouement to the mystery, and a heartwarming ending where Vina finally gets her man. :adore:

I will save "The Squire of Gothos", one of Trek's most delightful aliens.

Saving "THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS".

Creepy episode with a good story. It also sort of mirrors what's going on with our society. Landru was a computer, and it controlled their world. We have our computers already essentially in control of everything, including Google that seems to 'guide you' toward more of what it thinks you want.

Pretty soon, we will all be 'of the body'.

Surprised "Operation -- Annihilate!" is still here. That is a top tier TOS for me. All the stuff down on the planet, so good, such a compelling vibe.

I'm going to save "Charlie X". It's not the greatest Enterprise vs. God episode out there, but putting these powers in the body of a teenager makes so much sense, as everything already feels so big at that age. An excellent meeting of high concept and metaphor.

Saving "THE MENAGERIE, PART II".

Not as good as the first part, but it continues showing us Spock's unwavering loyalty. And gives Pike a happy ending.

They'll both end up in the finals anyway, so this doesn't matter much. But somebody has to end the round, so...

I'm saving "Mudd's Women." Yes, it's pretty sexist. No, it hasn't aged well. But -- the women had their own motivations for being part of Harry's scheme, which showed they had agency. So that was better than it could have been. And I always liked Eve's speech about how beauty isn't what makes a woman a good partner.

"The Alternative Factor" always gave me a headache. I never liked it despite the fact that, the first time I saw it, I had a tremendous crush on guest star Robert Brown.
