Star Trek Leaving Crave?

This may not apply for too many but thought I report it. Today I tried playing Picard not on the CTV app but via ON DEMAND with my PVR ( all 30 episodes are available). It played a whole episode commercial free. I have an Ignite HD PVR box and watched it using the box's on demand interface. Now this a small sample size and I realize many do not have a cable box/ CTV Sci-fi subscription. Normally I wouldn't but I live in a condo that automatically subscribes with Rogers Cable. Our condo just renewed a contract and we are getting a sweetheart bulk cable deal.

Will test more episodes and report it here. I also have an Apple TV and can just use the CTV app but for now on demand via cable seems to be a better viewing experience ,( ad free) especially for older episodes of the newer trek shows. Currently all of Picard, LD ,SNW and Prodigy are listed as playable via om demand. And all of Discovery except season 1( same selection as the CTV app)

Edit: I have seen a smattering of other episodes of Picard and Prodigy on on Demand and so far commercial free. Could be temporary thing though.

It's too bad CTV app doesn't have a "premium" subscription option. CBC has GEM premium, Rogers has CityTv + but CTV only has ad supported. I would imagine such a subscription would cost less than Crave.

My Crave subscription was up for renewal this week, so I cancelled it. I'll try signing up for P+ a day or two before season 4 of Lower Decks launches.

I tried my old CBS-AA credentials from that 3-month free promotion a few years back, but they didn't work. I don't know if they purged the old accounts in the rebranding, or if it's just because it's been a certain number of months, but either way, it was gone. When I had cancelled Crave previously, I had always been able to log back in to reactivate.

Once thing that I already don't like about P+ is that it appears that you have to subscribe just to even see what's available on the service. Both Crave and Prime allow you to just go to the site and browse what's available.

Maybe Bell is still negotiating with Paramount. Star Trek has been integral to Space since it's inception.
Star trek isn't free. There's tons of show better suited for space including Babylon 5 Battlestar Galactica space above and beyond etc.

This site is a bit of an echo chamber most trek fans still actively watching trek are not likely using crave of cable.

Crave is a garbage service if any Americans are wondering it's basically just a pile of leftover shows that aren't on Netflix Amazon prime etc. Its expensive and doesn't offer much beyond HBO.

It's the definition of a service you get for a month a year to binge 2 3 news shows and cancel.

I sincerely doubt any part of trek is profitable for them at this point. Trek is an option on Netflix Amazon prime as well as something you can purchase.

Low interest rates meant companies would waste money with the hope e eventually their streaming services would become profitable and they never did. Now that interest rates are going way up it's coming to end they need money now, its gonna fundamentally change streaming aftercthexwriters strike.

I just made a more detailed post about this in the Lower Decks forum, but I figured I'd also share here, since it's relevant to the discussion we've been having, but TV Passport (a site I trust) is saying that Lower Decks S4 will in fact be airing on CTV Sci Fi. So any Canadians who have not cut the cord will still have a means to legally watch Lower Decks episodes without having to subscribe to Paramount+ or waiting for the physical media releases.

And I would assume the same will be true for most other Trek shows in the foreseeable future. The final season of Disco will almost certainly air in CTV Sci-Fi. The only uncertainty is Prodigy. But then, Prodigy is an uncertainty for everyone at the moment, Canadian or otherwise.

I have cut the cable, so this doesn't impact me directly... but it actually makes me very happy that Star Trek will still be available on regular TV here, and that people that watch on CTV Sci-Fi will continue to be able to do so! Great news! :techman:

Well, I got signed up for Paramount+ today for the Lower Decks premiere tomorrow. Apparently it still had my credentials on file from that three-month promo I had for CBS All-Access back in the early days of Discovery. Which means I didn't get the seven free days, but oh well.

A bit of oddity in Canada. The first 2 episodes of SNW that recently aired on CBS was simulcast on Global Canada. ( I accidentally PVR'd it )

First time I I've seen a non Bell entity broadcast anything Star Trek in a long time .

That is odd. While a majority of shows that air on CBS in the US air on Global in Canada, CTV does still have a few CBS shows. And given the new episodes air on a Bell Media channel, you'd think CTV should have been guaranteed it. IIRC, I'm pretty sure when CBS aired Disco S1 back in fall 2020 it was CTV that simulcast it in Canada.

I would guess it was a fuck up and Global had the rights to show whatever SNW replaced

Most of Star Trek has disappeared from the CTV app. Picard, Prodigy, Discovery only list extras. No episodes playable. And Strange New Worlds has a "leaving soon" notice. Has anyone else noticed this? I fear Paramount may be ground fathering out the broadcast rights too in time.

Well, yeah, that's what this thread is about. Broadcast rights are still with Bell (for now) but not streaming.

I know but the Trekmovie article (quoting Bell media) said although its leaving Crave streaming, CTV Sci-fi fii subscribers were still able to login with their cable credentials and watch the shows on their add supported CTVapp (like other CTV cable content) That was the case until recently. What I'm saying is that's its possible that they are also.losing the cable rights soon, hence not being able to access the cable shows on their app.

I don't know what article you are referring to specifically but I suspect they're talking about live streaming as it airs and the associated streaming window for a bit of time later that's become common with live TV. When I open my Bell TV app they're still there if you subscribe to CTV Sci Fi.

Lower Decks is there for me too. ( all episodes) But Picard and Disco is now gone. Do they show up for you?

No, previous seasons are permenantly gone as discussed. They're past the first run streaming window. SNW first run streaming window ends soon too. When the new season of Disco starts it will air on CTV Sci-Fi and stream for a short time after as well.

Here's the article

Bell Media also confirmed CTV Sci-Fi subscribers will continue to have access to all episodes of Strange New Worlds, Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and Prodigy via CTV.ca and the CTV app.

The above is no longer true ( at least for me). All episodes were to stay via CTV app ( for cable subscribers), not just new episodes with post airing expiry window
