Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

The only reason I did subscriptions with Eaglemoss back in the beginning was in order to get lower shipping costs on the models. In retrospect, it may have been a mistake, as I didn't get ships until 3-5 months after they were available on the main online store (if I ever got them at all) and, as a result, I have some gaping holes in my collection of ships that I was unable to get before they went under. Did I save money? Short term, yes. Those savings will quickly diminish once I am forced to pay eBay prices on these things that I should have gotten in the first place without delay. Subscribers were definitely forced into the back seat in favor of one-off store customers. Might be a British thing...

It's been about a month since I got anything, but I saw the T'Plana Hath was included in today's drop and couldn't resist. I got the Voyager aeroshuttle and Eyemorg ship along with it.

There are a few things in todays drop I’m kinda interested in. Especially since I still have the August coupon. But i don’t think it’s anything that will sell out anytime soon. I’ll have to see what is in the Friday drop next week.

At this point I’m only really interested in the Yosemite shuttlecraft, and I guess Dresshaus if that’s the other unreleased Universe offering. There are a couple of bonuses left I wouldn’t mind picking up, Friendship One and Conestoga, along with the XL 2009 Enterprise, but I haven’t seen any announcements any of those might be coming so I think I’m pretty close to being done.

Oh yeah, there is nothing left that’s “need to have” like the Cerritos was. I want the Yosemite and the E-F but I won’t lose sleep if I miss them.

I was just looking at basic stuff today that I missed out on in the past, like the Andorian Battle Cruiser and thinking “that would be cool to have”

I don't mind the idea of a subscription, my issue is more what it entails, if there are going to be a zillion rereleases of ships I already have, it will unfortunately be a pass.
Presumably, there releases would focus on two types of ships: the newer hero ships (Neo-Connie, USS Cerritos) and perennial classics (23rd century Klingon bird of prey, Enterprise-nil, Enterprise-D, etc.).

I stuck to the subscriptions out of loyalty, which cost more money because the discount codes outweighed any sub savings. It was only after sub models appeared weeks or months after online shop releases that I cut the cord.

Looks like Fanhome will be producing new Star Trek starships starting next year.

it’s the same company that is finishing up the “Build the Enterprise D” model.
Fanhome is DeAgostini Publications. They basically have the same business model as Eaglemoss originally used. I have a couple of their racecar and spacecraft releases, the quality is on par with Eaglemoss (probably used the same Chinese factories). Curious to see if they just restart the regular Starship subscription but with newer ships, with maybe an option to do 1-180 again (assuming they get the rights to reuse those molds).

the tweet I saw said it’s been hinted that the first ship will be the new Titan.

I hope if they do subscriptions they also sell standalone. Otherwise count me out.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure if they do standalone, there doesn’t seem to be an option on their website. The ones I’ve picked up were all from eBay, and may have been ones that people had to buy as part of a subscription and didn’t want. Although, I suppose they could have newsstand versions - or maybe some comics shops, etc., will get a few subscriptions to resell.

It's possible that they're also absorbing some of EM's infrastructure (client lists, warehouses, that sort of thing) and part of the acquisition is to allow them to move into the a la carte sales space.

I’m not entirely convinced that didn’t lead to Eaglemoss’ downfall, I think when all sales are subscription-based you can control things much better. It also forces folks to buy everything, so the business don’t end up upside down on the less desirable models.

I always got the impression that their financial situation arose from overextending themselves with all the licensing from the multiple properties involved. Too much up-front investment without enough ROI to back it up.

In any case, there were a number of missteps that ultimately led to their fall. No one thing killed them.
