After watch Picard Season 3 and seeing that the starfleet renamed the USS Titan-A to the USS Enterprise-G after the crew of the Enterprise-D saved the Federation, it made me wonder: Should Starfleet have renamed Excelsior the Enterprise-A and them build a new excelsior that Sulu would've command per TUC or are you glad it stayed a Constitution class?

The Excelsior should have been re-christened the NCC-1701-B at the end of STIV (the reveal in Picard S3 was an homage to this scene), and that should have been the hero ship for STV and STVI. Then there would be no need to commission the 1701-B in Generations, and it would match the model in the D's conference room.

I think at the time it was fully recognized that the refit-Constitution design was an overwhelming fan favorite, and the Excelsior design at that point was pretty polarizing.

No, because the way that we got the Ent-G was needlessly convoluted, so the less of that, the better.

Nope. (see next)

This. Scotty even badmouths the Excelsior in the scene leading up to the reveal of the A. The prevailing attitude by that time was that the Excelsior was the antithesis of the hero ship.

The term “pregnant guppy” in the comics or film?

I think DC had a small bottom-facing deflector on Excelsior.
