Crew Rank Insignia?

So Lt JG Montgomery Scott had one full stripe. At this point I'm convinced they're messing with us on purpose.

Almost everyone except Pike is showing one rank higher than they are. Well, and we have to ignore Chapel entirely. Kirk has the correct stripe as well, his issue is that he should be a Lt. Commander by now.

He should?

I thought he was about to be the executive officer of the Farragut but wasn't yet?

Actually I was wrong, I was thinking he'd been at the lower ranks too long compared to the 5 years he has to make it through Lt commander and Commander, but he's been out of the Academy about 4-5 years at this point, so it's just about right.

Did he? I thought he had no stripe at all.

I'll have to rewatch now.

Not sure if it needed a spoiler tag, but better safe than sorry. :D

Didn't the Cage and such early episode uniforms not yet have the broken stripe to help with rank identification? So a lot of people with like a step or two rank difference had the same number of stripes?

The Cage had everyone with one stripe. The only variation was on Chief Garrison whose stripe had a lattice design. In WNMHGB the captain has two stripes and all other officers one. TOS proper introduces the broken stripe. Joe Tormolen is famously the only Lt jg seen, IIRC.

Correct on all points.

However, it should be noted that certain guest characters outside of the "Starship Service" such as Captain Rampart from Charlie X continued to wear the WNMHGB variation through at least the first season.

I thought that Scott's stripe wasn't a full one, but a thin (or half-sized) one.

It's almost like it's a merger of the current traditional naval system and the TOS version, or maybe a transitioning from the former to the latter...

yeah, I can't tell if it's wide or thin from that picture. Which is actually a major flaw in the rank design.

It's definitely a wide stripe, but that picture is hard to see. Here's another one that hopefully shows it better, although it still doesn't show up that well due to his distressed uniform.

It does indeed doesn't show up well, but as a full stripe, it kind of reinforces the idea that the rank insignia is really about general positions of authority, regardless of actual rank. The more stripes you have simply shows the more clout you have within a given department.
