Looks like Disney are handling all the DW promo at SDCC and have put it in with their kids shows. (And quite right too.)

There is a segment of Doctor Who fandom that are really into the various sonic screwdrivers--mostly as collectibles and/or props for their costumes.

Hence Character Options having sold out completely on the first day and them now going for crazy prices on ebay.

Though not as crazy as this.

Yeah, that's definitely a buyer beware sort of thing. Some stuff are being presented as toys, while others as high-end collectibles--the latter of which can indeed have ridiculous prices. The now defunct Anvos did that with Star Trek: Discovery phaser pistols, IIRC.

Can't say I'm surprised the new 14th Doc's sonic has already sold out. I must have seen at least a half-dozen video links about it on my YouTube recommendations already, so to say it's trending today might be an understatement...

While doing his cover shoot for Rolling Stone UK, Ncuti Gatwa talked about being cast on Barbie, what he loves about The Doctor and Doctor Who, and how David Tennant was one of the first actors he looked into when decided to become an actor himself:

It gives me shivers to see Doctor Who promoted alongside big stuff like Percy Jackson and Goosebumps.

I really think after all these years Doctor Who might be poised on taking a step into a much bigger arena. Very exciting stuff. I'd say within the year Doctor Who will be far more 'visible' to the public than Star Trek even.

Though it sounded like this is just a special pre-release version colored with metallic silver rather than the standard brushed-silver-color paint normally used on the toys. There's probably going to be a normal one, later.

Though they do drive me nuts with their variations. They seem to just randomly add and remove features without rhyme or reason, and I don't know if there's any fan-site or anything that'll help you figure out if the one you're about to buy is the good version with all the features, or one that's been stripped down to the minimum. For instance, I'd had a River Song sonic, it was damaged in a move, so I bought another one, not realizing until I got it that the second one didn't have the extra lights under the little removable door or the ability to switch the color between red and blue.

I was in the queue, had one in my basket, but had to go tend to other things… and now I shan’t be getting one I expect.
