The Ahsoka series is coming.

Ashley Eckstein told Cinema Blend that she thinks it's crucial to watch Clone Wars, Rebels, and even Tales of the Jedi to fully appreciate Ahsoka:

I actually recommend to everyone who is excited about the upcoming Ahsoka series, I highly recommend that you take the time to watch Clone Wars, and watch Star Wars Rebels, and even Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. Because if you don't, you're going to miss out on crucial, crucial backstory that you really need to know to fully enjoy the Ahsoka series, which is so exciting.
.
.
.
We're gonna get so many new and incredible stories, but without that backstory, and full understanding of who Ahsoka is and even who the other characters are, you're not going to have as rich or in-depth of an understanding and appreciation of what's going to happen in the series without the backstory, so I'm very grateful that Clone Wars and Rebels and Tales of the Jedi are on Disney+. Any chance I get, I tell fans, 'Go and watch it and binge it before you watch the Ahsoka series. It's really gonna matter.'
.
.
.
And then Clone Wars and Rebels and even Tales of the Jedi in general... You know, at some point, most Star Wars fans go back and watch the movies. They watch Episodes IV, V, and VI, and I, II and III. Well now, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, they're a part of that timeline. It's part of the story. It's part of the overall trajectory and journey of these characters, so without watching those series, you're kind of missing out. They're all connected. I highly recommend that fans watch them.

While I have obviously watched all of those shows, this show will completely sink if it actually requires all of that. The vast majority of the general audience of this show will be going in knowing (in general) the movies, probably The Mandalorian and maybe BoBF (even if they've seen Obi-Wan/Andor, those shows don't seem very connected to this one).

Most people that watch this kind of thing, aka the people that make up most of the audience, are casual SW fans and don't watch the cartoons, especially adults. Now I love a lot of in depth continuity, but requiring TCW/Rebels for a (presumably) expensive, mainstream live action Star Wars project is just a terrible idea, they need to have found a way to give people backstory and possibly make them care about characters from TCW/Rebels without requiring people to go watch literally hundreds of episodes of TV.

Its what I've been worried about since the beginning. To use a personal anecdote, my Dad and younger brother like Star Wars, and really like The Mandalorian, but wouldn't watch a second of any of the animated shows if you paid them. They're both interested in Ahsoka because of the character's Mandalorian and BoBF appearances, and just liking what seems to be some good Force user action. If the show tries to just shove the Rebels characters at them they're probably just going to not care, and possibly be annoyed unless the characters are written in a way that makes them understandable, and hopefully appealing, to people that never saw them in the cartoons.

Of course this is article is just someone promoting the SW shows in general, hopefully the writers of Ahsoka took into account the average viewer of a live action SW show not watching TCW/Rebels.

Ahsoka = Rebels Season 5.

And personally I'm down with that, but a lot of people are going to be left scratching their heads, I'm thinking. Right now I think Filoni is hell bent on telling the story he wants to tell, and bringing those threads together for a 'finale' movie to wrap up all his shows.

ETA: Just in case anyone wants to catch up on Ahsoka/Sabine related 'Rebels' episodes but doesn't have the time to rewatch the whole show, or even a condensed "must watch" playlist; the official DisneyXD youtube channel still has these compilation videos up.

They're basically a bunch of abridged episodes edited together into a more or less coherent narrative. There's also ones on Vader's appearances, Ezra's journey as a Padawan through season 1, and all the lightsaber duels & lore.

And the countdown for when someone misconstrues this as an assertion that you NEED to watch those shows to even follow the plot of 'Ahsoka' starts . . . now!

Seriously though; I'm sure she's 100% correct, because of course you have to watch those stories to get the full context. That said, Filloni is an old hand at this and I expect he's crafted it as he always does so that anyone can watch it and follow along without getting lost.
After all, it wasn't necessary to watch 'Clone Wars' to follow 'Rebels' despite heavily featuring Clone Wars characters and continuing several threads. The audience was always told as much as they needed each time, but were never overloaded with exposition.
Was it a richer experience to have the full context? Absolutely! Was it necessary to enjoy the show? Not even remotely! See also: OT & PT.

Eventually there will be a list of the relevant episodes. But we'll probably have to see the series to know precisely which ones.

A fan editor named Eddie Dean (aka JamtheHuman) has re-edited the entire Clone Wars series into a much more coherent whole, reorganizing some of the episodes and arcs and making full length TV episodes out of them. Furthermore, he has created a matrix / flow chart which gives several color coded options for watching them, so that you can go from "I just need to watch the ones related to Rebels" to "Recommended full experience" to "Recommended full experience plus all the sucky ones", etc.

There is also some original music included in the fan edit which is superlative, and the beginning of each show is done differently than the 'news serial' version in the stock show. Anyone interested should check out fanedit.org and look it up. If you PM eddie he'll send you links to his chart, which has the links to his fan edits and also includes recommendations for where and when in the order to watch key episodes of stuff like Tales of the Jedi for added oomph and story coherence.

As far as Tales of the Jedi is concerned, the only episodes about Ahsoka are episode 1 and episodes 5-6. ( As an aside, part of episode 5 only makes sense if you've seen TCW season 7. )

We're watching Clone Wars right now and rewatched her Mandalorian episode, so I think we'll be ok.
I've watched enough Clone Wars, including the last season in the last 3 years but Rebels was never something I got all the way through.

Well at least the Lego sets are cool.

You might want to at least catch up with the last eight episodes of season 4 before 'Ahsoka' comes out. Aside from being very relevant to the new show, it's some of the best stuff in 'Rebels' overall.

When you come right down to it, what parts of TCW, Rebels, and TOTJ are really necessary to tell Ahsoka's story?
In TCW you just need to know she was Anakin's padawan, then you can pretty much jump all the way to the point where she's almost kicked out of the Jedi order and she's like "fuck you, you can't fire me because I quit" and then you can probably skip the bit with the two sisters but you want her fighting Darth Maul, being on the Republic ship when order 66 goes down and hanging out with Rex right after ROTS. Then later on she kills an Inquisitor.
In Rebels you want to know she was Fulcrum in S1, you might want to know she battled more Inquisitors and Vader became aware of her, and you definitely need Malachor, her battle with Vader and being pulled into the WBW, then leaving the WBW and ultimately turning up in the ending of Rebels to gather Sabine. (Well, maybe that last bit will be covered by the show.) And you need the purrgil episodes, and what happened with Kanan.

You can't skip the Mortis arc.

It is trippy, but goes into who Ahsoka is later and the WBW is tied to Mortis, though I imagine ancient Force lore will come up in Ahsoka as they visit temples and do rituals.

Yeah, that bird hasn't been following her around the galaxy for three decades for no reason at all. Mortis is a major turning point for her character.

Also just about everything in those episodes is steeped in metaphor, and if one pays attention it says a lot about her character beyond just what happened with The Daughter.

Most people can fill in the gaps when it comes to backstory. All you need to know is Ahsoka has a history with these characters. A history that will no doubt be spelled out in exposition. Fans who saw the cartoons will no doubt get a greater appreciation due to having seen that stuff play out from watching the cartoons. New fans though can still enjoy what they are seeing by the dialogue and acting being good enough to tell the story.

Maybe 10 episodes of TCW are really important for her arc, then maybe 3-4 for Rebels. But this picks up the Rebels story line, so an entire rewatch, or atleast season 3-4.

EDIT:
took some screenshots of the E Wing, Can tell some of the design choices they made, but not really the best shots..
