Star Trek Leaving Crave?

Unless one is a Videotron cable subscriber in Quebec. All online access to Bell Media specialty channels (which require inputting your cable company account number to access) are withheld by Bell from Videotron because the owners/boards of each have been in a “death match” over fees and other things for nearly 20 years. As such, I have to make sure to PVR anything on those channels or it’s gone after it airs. Just FYI for a small subset of Canadian viewers.

That honestly sucks for those like you in that situation. I thought that when Crave was opened up to other cable systems due to CRTC intervention way back when, that one of the conditions was that it be opened up to all of them. That was after Shaws' Shomi service folded leading to a lack of competition.

I can get Crave if I want to pay for it. I can’t log into the various CTV apps or websites to watch episodes I might have missed for free. For example, with my Videotron account number, I can log into the Global app and watch past episodes of something for free (for some shows it’s the whole season, for others it’s a few weeks back—depends on the deal Global has with the American network of the show; all Global stuff is available to the start of the season). But no go for CTV specialty channels. Only the main CTV one (and no Trek there—but I can get I Dream of Jeannie, so… ;) ).

Currently Paramount plus Canada has Discovery and Picard. It had everything a short while back cuz I used to watch DS9 on there.

What is going on?

If it's true ,that all the trek shows will soon be an exclusive to Paramount plus Canada,( the current speculation) removing trek shows now is indeed very strange. Makes zero sense especially if they were already there until recently. The news of trek leaving Crave should make them more available ( or "pushed") there ( P+ Canada) not less. Perhaps something else is going on here?

I already have Netflix and Amazon Prime. I personally wouldn't mind if one of them became the streaming home of Trek in Canada. I realize allot of people wouldn't be in that same boat though

Yeah, that's a raw deal. Of course, I can't as well, but that's more of a technical problem with the account than the actual ability. Never been able to get the apps working.

Yeah, I agree. I think it's unfortunate timing in light of Prodigy's removal as it's throwing availability into question. At least under Crave it was assured, but who knows how long P+ will last?

I still think this had something to do with Discovery's production ending. Bell invested significantly in the new CBS studio built for Discovery (and assuming other shows too) and therefore, I'm sure that included exclusivity via Cancon. But now that Discovery's no longer in production, the contract is likely no longer valid.

I don't have Paramount+ Canada but I just saw an ad for it while watching YouTube and the ad had clips from Discovery, Picard and SNW. So it appears that the Trek library is moving over to Paramount+

Perhaps. But they already had the trek library on P+ up until recently and (now?) many of the series have been removed. That's the strange part.

The Canadian Paramount+ is accessible through the Canadian Amazon Prime, though it costs extra. I don't know if it's a better deal than just subscribing to Paramount+ itself anyway.

Just checked. Same price/offers. So really doesn't matter. Only difference is convenience with Prime in using the same login credentials instead of needing to set up new account details with P + separately

Considering that the ads on the CTV app are twice as loud as the shows they air, no thanks. I'll just PVR the shows. Or wait for the Blurays.

Bell likely wouldn't do this. But i wonder if they would be allowed to show all the Trek shows on the CTV app commercial free and or not needing to login with a CTV sci fi account if they wanted to. Or if they would be prevented to do this by Paramount. There is precedent of ad supported streamers running virtually commercial free content . Just recently I watched the first 6 Mission Impossible movies on Pluto and there was literally 2 ads between the 6 movies.

IIRC, at least as far as CTV app goes that sort of thing is typically only done for special cases, usually season premieres as a sort of bait to get you to sign up for the app to watch the rest of the season.

This might have been reported elsewhere on the board, but just wanted to mention that when I went to watch today's SNW episode, there was a new message indicating that SNW was leaving the service on September 9.

2 days after Star Trek Day

I'm going to miss watching new episodes of Lower Decks and SNW in the AM.

They don't air on CTV until 8-9 PM. Crave got them around 3AM

Discovery hit Crave until Fridays, so nothing to miss there lmao.

I saw it today too. First time I noticed a date on the service for SNW

I wish we had some clarity on where Canadians can stream modern Trek beyond Aug/Sept. (other than CTV app which is ad supported and usually drops next day). If it is Paramount plus Canada, surely this would be internally known by now. It almost feels they are in no hurry to let us know perhaps because our market is not too important to them. I don't know. The fact the Paramount plus Canada has recently removed some of the Trek series is also confusing . Especially since everyone seems to be speculating it will be the new home of Star Trek in Canada,

BTW, the reason I said Paramount may not care for our market is because back in 2020, they removed a bunch of shows from PP plus Canada with *zero* warning. I was enjoying classic episodes of MacGyver in HD and boom its gone. At least Crave is giving heads up. And I believe Paramount Plus USA has similar warnings when a show is about to leave their platform.

^ I think Paramount+ is probably a safe assumption, but yes, it seems weird that there hasn’t been some kind of announcement or press release or whatever. Maybe there’s an agreement not to make an announcement until most of the shows leave Crave on July 31? No idea.

Maybe Bell is still negotiating with Paramount. Star Trek has been integral to Space since it's inception.

Clarity is something that's been missing since we started Streaming in general. While in the U.S, it's generally straightforward to know where something will air, this isn't really the case in Canada due to the complicated nature of the rights being spread all over the place, and where something will stream isn't always general knowledge as more often than not, no announcements are made to state these things. That's the frustrating thing about the nature of streaming in Canada.
