What would you do with a transporter?

One good way to use one in "The Vengeance Factor"... "Away team to Enterprise. Lock onto Yuta and beam her directly to the brig."
Too bad Riker didn't think of that one.
Eh, even without beaming her out, it was still unnecessary to vaporize her, given each time Riker shot her she doubled over. Riker could have easily subdued her while she was doubled over.

But this isn't the thread for that.

^I suppose it would have sounded a bit lame / anticlimactic. 'But on that day, a century ago, my life ended and my search began. I was the one chosen, transformed. My cells were altered, my aging slowed, enough to finish my task. Only to be beamed out (*) at the very point of completing my century-old mission at the last possible instant and to be put in a Federation prison'

(*) Or:: 'to be stunned by a phaser',etc.

But you're right, it isn't really the thread for that :)

My use would be more mundane - commuting. I'm retired now, but every day for 40 years I drove 20 miles each way for work, through gridlocked north NJ highways. On a bad traffic day it could take an hour. If was snowing, up to 3 hours. I spent every minute of those drives wishing for a transporter.

I remember some of those stories and rants! :D

A functioning transporter useable by the general public would put me out of a career. I would actually not mind that, though- air travel has turned into a misery for everyone, including those who work in the industry. If something better came along, that's just the march of progress.

Why would I know some British crime show? I don't like crime shows, and I'm not British.

Midsomer regularly features exotic and inventive means of doing away with people, and the transporter's homicidal use as mentioned here in the thread would definitely leave the detectives scratching their heads. :)

I don't always get allusions, either. For what it's worth. I should have clarified for you.

I'd use the transporter to transport myself somewhere else. I wonder what would be too ridiculous for transporter use.
Our current modes of transportation (bicycle, automobile, airplane, ship, walking, train, etc) have different commute times for different distances.

But transporter use is instantaneous for any distance.
Sure, use the transporter to travel to another continent.
But would you use the transporter to get down the street? A couple miles away? A neighbor a couple blocks away?
What about across the state? To a nearby city? Across town?
It's all the same travel time, so what would be too ridiculous for transporter use?

I'd want to scale it up.

The ultimate recycler......beam all nukes to the Moon---beam all fissile and other ores and valuable goods to repositories.

use with scanner to beam all fossils out and replace with inert rock, etc.

What would I do with it?

First thought: Absolutely nothing, that thing is terrifying!

Second thought: Actually, if I can figure out a handheld remote control for the thing, it’d be a great self-defense weapon. You’re threatening me? Suddenly you’re in Borneo!

Third thought: The transporter buffer! Finally someplace to store all my crap and clean up this place!

Fossil fuels?! Most Mainers would freeze in the winter without them! :wah:

Beam the nuclear waste to the Moon and set it off! Then we can play Space: 1999 for real!

Wouldn't that be somewhat risky in terms of giving your secret away, though? I mean, if the guy reaches a settlement, he'll probably survive, and if he can prove that he was on the other side of the globe just hours before (and no trace of him traveling to Borneo by plane can be found), authorities might start investigating. Especially if you pull this trick more than once.

Bit rude.
Actually I found IMC Headquarters a bit rude, for making allusions to some random show instead of just telling me what show they were talking about and why. Which is why I responded like that.
But he has clarified it now, so let's let it be water under the bridge.

Thank you! Now I understand. Don't worry about it anymore. :)

And I'm still living under the Teterboro landing pattern, wondering if that's Marso 3000 feet over my head. :)

Some days it is.

5-7 years more and then I'm hanging up my wings. If I go to 2030 that'll be a 40 year flying career and 30 with my company, the first 10 being in the nav. I'll find some retirement gig that is part time and doesn't involve airplanes, airports, or hotels.

Yeah, I was thinking a more positive spin too. I would love to go to London or Paris one day and this can get me there in seconds. I would need to beam into a secluded area of course, but that's fine.

I think I would do the same. The only potential issue I could imagine with that is that I could get involved in some problem (e.g. traffic accident) and find myself unable to explain to the authorities how I got into their country.

Then of course, I could beam out, but depending on the circumstances, that might not be the moral thing to do.
