What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Please, elucidate. Because it's a critical plot point of TMP that it's basically a brand new ship. Aside from the basic arrangement it's very different inside and out.

Well, you did then post a picture showing how the outside isn't that different. Bridge, BC deck, impulse engines, dorsal, defector dish, three sensors around the dish, pylons (now angled, sure) warp engines still about the same proportions, hangar deck about the same size.

Did TMP cost more money? Yup. Do current shows cost more money? Yup.

PIC Season 2 is the worst season of any Star Trek series since 1987-88. And might be even worse.

By that metric, I assume you're referring to TNG season 1 or 2. I think Enterprise season 2 was worse than those because even at their worst, the first couple seasons of TNG were never out and out boring. Enterprise season 2 and TOS season 3 are the only Star Trek seasons that are absolutely binge proof, but for different reasons. One because it was largely bad and the other because it was largely boring.

Not that I feel the first couple seasons of The Next Generation were masterpieces or anything, but they never bored me.

Season 1. Episodes were either great or pure dreck.

And the ratio wasn't in favor of great or by a light-year.

And how is the SNW Enterprise that different? It still uses the same basic design.

Controversial opinions:

  1. SNW main theme is my favourite.
  2. Continuity and canon (wrongly used interchangeably) are trivial, at best, at influencing my enjoyment of any iteration of Trek.
  3. Into Darkness is the best of all extant Trek films. 09 is second.
  4. Trek is NOT a “period piece” and should NOT be treated as such.
  5. No actor should be expected to “channel” a previous actor’s performance of a role.
  6. Time travel stories should be accepted as presented, because, well…it’s not real.
I’m hungry now. Time to make dinner. Cheers.

PICARD season 2 is the worst season of the franchise. DISCO season 1 is right behind it. TAS was actually better than either of these seasons, overall.

TOS season 3 had about 1/3 of it being bad. ENT season 2 was mostly dull. TNG season 1 had its flaws, but there was more good than bad. TNG season 2 was a marked improvement, overall.

I can rewatch big chunks of TOS Season 3. PIC Season 2 is just a stupid, confusing and ridiculous ride after the first episode and only gets slightly better in the final episode when Q says goodbye to Picard.

The TOS sound effects wouldn't be used today if they weren't already used for TOS. They sound too goofy in isolation.
Given how often I hear TOS sounds effects used in other shows (not just Futurama), I'm gonna disagree with this. The door opening/closing sound alone practically says, "THIS IS SCIENCE FICTION."

The SNW Enterprise is a lot closer to the TOS Enterprise than the Refit ever was.
I'm not sure how that can be done mathematically. The warp engines have more of a TOS shape, obviously. But then they do lots of fiddly bits on the engines. The refit saucer is arguable closer to the TOS ship. As is the impulse assembly. The overall proportions of the refit are closer than the SNW because the SNW ship was making design choices based on both the TOS and the TMP ships. There's also the issue of adding another 500m onto SNW.

But yes, absolutely, both TMP and SNW are trying to be updated representations of TOS and neither is trying to stray TOO far from the original as opposed to JJ which wanted to mess with the shape more.

(But TMP did it better. ;) )

No actor should be expected to “channel” a previous actor’s performance of a role.
If a new actor is playing a role previously played by someone else, either to recreate the role for a new audience (SNW) or to replace an actor who is no longer available (Dumbledore in Harry Potter et al), they should start with "channeling" the original and build on it to create their own interpretation that brings to mind that it is still the same character, while making the character their own. I don't care how they morph the character into their own interpretation, just make me believe that it's the same character and that the changes are growth.

It's a mixed bag. But I think the good outweighs the bad. And I adore Carbon Creek.

"Carbon Creek," "First Flight" and "Regeneration" rank among the best Trek produced in the 21st century and, like I've said, TNG Season 1 and PIC Season 2 are much worse (I don't even think it's a contest) but when Season 2 stank, man, was it bad. "The Seventh" may be one of the most by-the-numbers, droningly boring Trek episodes of the past 25 years and "Precious Cargo" is just insultingly dumb and bad. "ANiS" sucks but at least there's a core of a heart to the story with Archer worried to death about his dog's life and our lead hero crashing and camping out in Sickbay to remain close to his buddy. It hits better as well as harder after losing my own dog to a brief illness in late 2021.

But the two aforementioned episodes are so, so much worse. Neither has any spark to it and in the case of "Precious Cargo" no intelligence. ENT's lowpoints are some of the worst nadirs of the whole Berman Era.
