SLV version of TMP on the TMP box set

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I bought the 5-disc special version of TMP, personally my favourite Star Trek picture. One reason to do this was specifically to see the Special Longer Version which I've never seen before.

There's not a separate disc for it in the box set. HiDefDigest says "The Theatrical Cut and The Longer Version share virtually the same 2160p Dolby Vision transfer. Packed on the same disc together, the Longer Version scenes slip in and out via seamless branching and I am quite impressed to say that you don't notice a change in visual quality."

TrekMovie says "Most importantly, the set adds another Ultra HD Blu-ray disc with 4K versions of the Theatrical and, exclusive to this set, the Special Longer Version. The various small “longer version” scenes are inserted to the theatrical version via seamless branching. So it’s all on one disc, when you first insert the disc you choose which of the two versions to play."

My issue is that I don't seem to be able to choose between the versions. When it loads and I press play, the time remaining in the film is 2hr 12m so it's the theatrical release.

Am I doing something wrong or missing something obvious?

Perhaps not all players can handle seamless branching? Also, make sure to update your firmware.

The SLV is incorporated only into the 4K version. Not the regular Blu-ray version in the same box. While the Blu-ray can play successfully in a 4K player, the 4K disc won't play in a regular Blu-ray player.

I don't have the set, but maybe the Angle button will give you an option to switch. Isn't there a menu where you can choose before you hit Play?

Further to Therin's point, I have got in touch with Panasonic to see if their 4K blu-ray player I'm using supports seamless branching. No word back yet. I did true to angle button too, Doug - thanks for the suggestion - but no joy.

I'd really love to see the SLV but will I have to buy a new player to see it???

Seamless branching is something media has been doing since the standard DVD days, there's no way a Panasonic doesn't support it. Are you able to bring up a menu? I'm sure there's an option.

It should be a menu option (I have many movies with seamless branching—it’s a nearly 25 year old tech and shouldn’t depend on the player). It is possible the disc isn’t authored properly, but that’s a disc problem, not a player problem.

Hi SidneyIsTheKiller. It just runs through the multi-language copyright notices then the Panasonic logo sequence appears. After that, it dives straight into the top menu. There is nothing in the top menu allowing to select the version of the movie you want. My blu-ray player sees over 5 hours worth of video on there so I know there are two films but, when the disc loads up, all I get is the theatrical version.

Try the pop-up menu button on the remote. Sometimes things are there and not the main menu. Also try diving into the extras.

The more I think about it, the more I think Therin's on the right track and you must be looking at the regular Bluray and not the 4K UHD (and just to make things more confusing, all the discs are technically Blurays and not DVDs, lol!). Make sure the disc you're using says "4K Ultra HD" on it.

Looking at an unboxing video, all five discs look rather annoyingly similar, I can easily imagine myself putting in the wrong one by accident (skip to 10:15 to see him take out each of the discs):

You need a 4K player, not a Blu-ray player.

Yep. Sorry about that. I was in a rush and when I typed DVD, my brain was prompting me that I had the wrong term.

SidneyIsTheKiller, you are correct - that is the very disc. I tried it again last night before going to bed but it didn't offer me the choice again.

I updated the firmware on the player too but that didn't make a difference.

How very frustrating! I paid £50 essentially to watch a film I can't actually watch.

* It should be noted that while the UK and US releases of the "Complete Adventure" 4K set contain the Special Longer Version, e.g. in Germany & Spain only the old 4K disc (containing only the theatrical version but not the Special longer Version) was placed in the "Complete Adventure" 4K set.

Regrettably, you might be right. I am in the UK but bought it from eBay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256104828804 - and it has two Scandanvaian flags on the back.

Think I might have to sell it back on eBay and buy the UK version. Thanks for all your help.

There must be a rights issue that prevented them from releasing the SLV outside North America. Sad!
