There’s nothing precluding Spock and Chapel being a couple or married in-between TOS and the movies, or after The Voyage Home.

I can’t see the Spock of The Motion Picture being with Chapel, especially when he’s been trying to purge the rest of his emotions (arguably, you could retcon that maybe a bad breakup is what caused him to pursue the Kolinahr). And since you would think she would be in the conversation for some of the stuff during Spock’s death, and part of the planning to get his body to Vulcan, I can’t see Chapel being with him during 2 through 4.

But anything after The Voyage Home is arguably open territory, since we know so little about the crew’s personal lives. It’s canon that both Sulu and Chekhov had families, but you’d never know it by what we saw on-screen. So it’s possible that the Spock of The Undiscovered Country is married to Chapel and goes home to her after the final scene for all we know.

I'm just going to inject the idea (and fervent hope) that sexually active adults in the distant future are familiar with contraception. And that responsible adults in the distant future use it. Accidental pregnancy is a fanfic trope I'd really like to go away. One way it could is if the woman decides not to leave her career to save someone else "discomfort." I hated Beverly Crusher's secret love child.

Chapel seemed very happy to see Spock when he arrived in TMP.

As far as her being MIA during Spock's resurrection etc, well we know practically every SNW character other than Spock is MIA during the mission to get Pike to Talos in Menagerie.

Yeah, of course. And I can see how it might happen (and sometimes in our forties it does catch us by surprise ). But what this often implies in fic is that one of these very smart people (usually the woman) is sexually irresponsible, naive, or subconsciously manipulative. I'd like to imagine a future where being conscious of the safety and security of yourself and your sexual partner is the rule rather than the exception. I know it's crazy, but a girl can dream.(Or write her own fic where adults make adult choices.)

Bear in mind that the point of Spock's arc in The Motion Picture is that after his encounter with V'Ger, he realizes the value of emotion and rejects the idea that he must not experience feelings or chase Kolinahr. So it's entirely plausible that Spock and Christine might have resumed their relationship in the aftermath of the V'Ger incident.

There is nothing "un-evolved" or "irresponsible" about having a child without getting married. Unmarried couples and unmarried former couples can be loving, responsible parents. Marriage is a personal choice, not an indicator of greater responsibility or of being "evolved."

His former partner had a child and didn't want him involved, which was sad and made for good drama, but... "out of wedlock" is an antiquated notion that doesn't even matter here and now in the real world.

I believe it is established in "Amok Time" as part of the "less than a marriage, more than a betrothal" thing.

But that's it, right? There's no other information on how it's done. The idea of this mental link up is just that one instance within the context of a specific event and episode and everything else fans just created themselves... is kind of what I'm realizing here.

That is mostly what I run in to with prequel series, and not just SNW but Discovery, Enterprise and all the way back to the Star Wars prequels (yes, I'm aware it's older problem than that but that's when I noticed it in myself). There are a ton of preconceived notions that we go through of what Star Trek is supposed to look like. We have a little box inside our head that says "Star Trek" on the outside of it and we toss things in there and go "Yup, that works." ANd certainly that doesn't work perfectly but if it fits in "close enough" then it's cool.

It can vary from person to person, but there is a clear line of thought that Trek is this perfectly continuous timeline of work that has never had disparity in any great measure. Which sounds nice, and is a great marketing tool, and isn't anywhere close to accurate. And it's OK to acknowledge what you like and don't like; it just don't make it mean there was more information there for us to go on. There really wasn't, not with Spock, not with Vulcans and not with T'Pring. We filled it all in and it got filed under "Star Trek" without question.
