Trek Medicine

And when they pull that, there will always be people like me who call them on it. We gotta remind them that we're not dumb, or they'd try to get away with even worse.

QUOTE: That leg was really, really broken, you see.
Struck by lightning, right? Whole leg was vaporized?
The needs of the drama outweigh the needs of verisimilitude. Star Trek…since 1966. See also: virtually all other fiction.

Fair enough. What else does Pike like besides horses?
As far as major Trek character pets go, we've had a cat, a beagle, an Irish setter, and a lionfish. Maybe you can't take a horse on a ship with you, but I don't see Capt. Pike as the "gerbil" type.

A fun topic might be to match assorted Trek characters with the pet you think suits their personality.

In terms of shrink medicine, appearance clearly trumps function. Consider...

Chain of Command: Picard is subjected to days of brutal torture and very nearly broken (indeed, it could be argued that from his own perspective he was broken) by Gul Madred. But he still looks like Picard so he returns to the chair like nothing happened.

Rascals: Picard has a transporter accident that doesn't affect him mentally in any way. Beverly wastes no time in bullying him into ceding command to Riker.

Maybe there should be a "Death in Trek" topic to discuss the psychological/ethical dimensions of choosing to either allow a creature to die or magick it back to life.

Especially if that creature is Neelix, and you have an audience to think about.

Apparently, we've moved past that. Like using money, eating meat, and everything else Humans are too enlightened for anymore. :guffaw:

What's the trope called that's essentially, "Trauma only affects you to the extent that the plot(s) require it"?

Counseling when it comes to the death of a parent is lacking in TNG. Consider these two instances.

Hero Worship - Young Timothy, traumatized by the near destruction of the Vico, is rescued by the Enterprise crew. How is he cared for? He's left alone to his own devices. He's not left in anyone's care, let alone a doctor. He fixate on Data, but that's entirely his decision.

The Bonding - Lt. Marla Aster is killed on an away team mission resulting in her son, Jeremy, being orphaned. Does anyone care for Jeremy? Does anyone take the poor boy in while he mourns? No. He's told his mother is dead and then left alone in his cabin. True, Worf eventually takes him under his wing, but there really isn't that instant rallying around this minor child who just became an orphan.

So much for Deanna and her crack team of therapists, counselors, and child welfare advocates.

It's an interesting question, actually... would Data or Worf make the best parent. I'm saying Data.

There are ways to induce drama w/o forgetting about past technology.

Some things aren't repairable, slicing off a limb then vaporizing the detached limb would be super hard to fix.

You'd basically need a cybernetic prosthetic or be stuck in a regrowth vat that re-grew your lost limb.

That could take weeks.

At least Data has the knowledge of countless parenting books within him.

Just going to use this thread to remind us all that Picard literally brought a civilian on board to have a person to confide in, so he wouldn't have to talk to Troi. He barely even wants to do it in cases of severe trauma

ENT: "Strange New World" -> Dude gets an all-natural makeover thanks to early transporter technology, but, courtesy of mid-22nd century medicine, he once again looks like a supermodel.
