Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

Tony Randall and Anthony Quinn each had two kids in their 70s. Robert De Niro just a had a kid. Something about celebrities getting married and divorced a lot and needing to have offspring every time.
I remember Robin Williams had a joke about Charlie Chaplin (I think). That a man can father children in his 70s, but he can't pick them up.

Well hey he was 82 and yet had a new child.. If it's the one I think you are referring to, famous actor al Pacino with a wife old enough to be a daughter yuck
From what my mom read, she's 29, which is almost pushing granddaughter age difference.

"Finally, on September 26, 1901, all was ready. Because of the permanency of this burial, a discussion arose among those present as to whether the coffin should be opened. Some people argued that the remains should be identified due to rumors around the country that Mr. Lincoln was not the body in the box. Other people thought opening the casket would be a violation of privacy. In the end, it was decided to open the coffin."

Gotta love that we've had conspiracy nuts for hundreds of years now.

One of those present for the Lincoln exhumation sent for his young son to leave school and hurry over, so as to witness the event. This fellow lived until 1963 (I think), and gave an occasional interview as the last man to have looked Lincoln in the face.

Follow up to my tennis post from a few days ago, upon further research it would appear that the French do indeed have a reputation for being the worst fans in tennis. The Sonego-Rublev match has a respectful crowd, but the match shown before it was awful.

That's crazy but super interesting.

Well, when your country invents the sport I suppose it was bound to happen.

This is the closes I have ever come to riding a rollercoaster. I just don't thinkI could handle actually riding one in real life.
So I think one of the horses that I've been keeping an eye on is getting skinnier, but of course now that I want to take a closer look at his condition and take another video to compare to the one I took a few weeks ago, they haven't come over by the fence.

Not all canned chili is created equally. Sometimes I buy Stagg when it's on sale. It wasn't on sale. Dennison was. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either.

People say "you know" as a way for their brain to catch up to their speaking without stopping. But do you also say "you know" because you're so used to hearing everyone else say it?

In an (informal) debate, people often will say "Wel-llll ...." or "Um-mmmm ..." between statements when speaking. I believe that this is just "holding the floor," an attempt to prevent an interruption whilst one gathers his or her thoughts.

I understand that the British have a phrase for this, calling it an "upperclass stammer." Their politicians, usually but not exclusively the Tories, would use it, repeating "... and ... and ... and" or "... but ... but ... but" before launching their counterpoint statement once it popped up into the mind. (Watch a tape of William F. Buckley Jr (American conservative) doing just this very nicely.)

I found that speakers whom I admired would often remain silent while pausing for recall. I used to try this, but found that my antagonists would invariably ignore me and would interrupt and continue their spiel. I suppose that one has to have proven stature or a commending presence to let silence speak.
